Dear Reader,
Believe it or not, we have another mystery in Cedar Cove! This one, ironically enough, involves the McAfees--Roy, who's a private investigator, and his wife, Corrie. They've been receiving anonymous postcards and messages asking if they "regret the past." Corrie says she has no idea what any of it means....
On a more positive note, they're both delighted that their daughter, Linnette, has moved to Cedar Cove to work at the new show more medical clinic. And when Corrie attended the humane society's "Dog and Bachelor Auction," she bought Linnette a date with Cal Washburn, who works at Cliff Harding's horse farm. Unfortunately, Linnette seems less enthusiastic about this than Corrie is.
Speaking of Cliff, the romance between him and Grace Sherman is back on. But that's only one of the many interesting stories here in town. Corrie's invited you and me for a coffee at the McAfee house--that's 50 Harbor Street--and we'll tell you everything we know!

Considering that I'm married to Cedar Cove's private investigator, you might think I enjoy mysteries.
But I don't -- especially when they involve us!
Roy's been receiving anonymous postcards and messages asking if we "regret the past."
We don't know what they mean....

I enjoyed this installment in the Cedar Cove Series. The storylines are moving in a different direction and new characters have come on board which keeps things fresh and moving.
Bless, I used to gobble these books down like chocolates back in the day. It was just so comforting to check in with the residents of Cedar Cove. My re-reads haven’t been that great though. This at least took my mind off of anything pressing and I just went with it though I thought the plot was way too obvious. I forgot about the whole thing with Linette and Cal dating.
I do think this was the beginning of me not really loving the series anymore. This one had I think about 5 separate plot points with Linette, her mother, Alison, Rachel, etc. it was just a mishmash of people and issues that seemed to take forever to resolve.

This is one of my favorites of the series so far. I really liked the mysterious cards and such but was hoping it to be a bit juicier than what it turned out to be. I love that we go back and 'visit' with characters from past books, and its like you are living down the street and you are a part of their community. Was so nervous for the Randall's! David Rhodes character is also introduced, and as much as I dislike him, I think he will be a great villain and I loved hearing about the things he was doing. Great read!
Someone is sending anonymous postcards to Corrie and Roy McAfee who live at "50 Harbor Street" in Cedar Cove, Washington. Roy is a private investigator who initially thinks the postcards refer to a past case of his, but he soon suspects otherwise. Their daughter Linette recently moved to Cedar Cove to work at the new health center. She is attracted to Dr. Chad Timmons, but much to her dismay, while he doesn't seem interested in her, ranch worker Cal Washburn is. Other residents in Cedar Cove have their own problems and worries. Judge Olivia Lockhart Griffin worries about her husband's weight and eating habits and pushes him to exercise with disastrous consequences. Olivia's mother Charlotte recently married Ben Rhodes and is pleased show more when Ben's son David reaches out to her, but Ben warns her that David may not be what he seems to be. Navy wife Cecilia Randall is pregnant, but having lost a baby daughter shortly after giving birth, she is very nervous about losing this baby and it doesn't help that her husband Ian is at sea. Cecilia isn't the only one worried about her pregnancy, Maryellen Bowman is pregnant and having complications that may force her husband Jon to make a painful decision.
"50 Harbor Street" is a good soap opera like book. Debbie Macomber is a good storyteller who creates characters that are real and that readers care about. Although the book focuses mainly on the McAfee's, there are numerous subplots going on. Macomber will focus on one set of characters in one chapter, another set in the next chapter, yet another set in the next and so on throughout the book which can be confusing. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for which character is featured and I often had to flip back to see what had happened several chapters back. There is a character guide in the front of the book, which is helpful, but in the future it would be better if Macomber cut back on the number of plots and characters in the books. With so many characters, Macomber does an amazing job of continuity through all the books (this is the fifth in an ongoing series), even referencing things in past books, although there is no mention of Nate's girlfriend which was a conflict in his relationship with Rachel in past books. While some of the plots in the book are unique, like the threatening postcards, other plots are a bit repetitive - isn't there one woman in Cedar Cove that can have a complication free pregnancy?

Thoughts:
Debbie Macomber is one of my favorite authors and the Cedar Cove series is my favorite series by Debbie. The 5th book in the Cedar Cove series, 50 Harbor Street was continuing story of all of our favorite characters. Cliff and Grace, Olivia and Jack, Corrie and Roy and many others. This particular book focuses on the story of Corrie and Roy and some mysterious postcards and gift baskets they have been receiving from an unknown person. The notes aren't threatening, but they elude to the fact that Roy may have some regrets from his past that he needs to address.
Macomber has a way of making her characters come to life. She uses a small town community to show her characters as they go to work, have relationships and go about their everyday activities. Her characters are the people we see in our own communities everyday. The Librarian at the Public Library, owners of the local restaurant or a quaint bed and breakfast. The local judge and the editor of the newspaper. These are all people that we can identify with. Macomber creates not only great love stories but also a great story of typical Northwest community. Readers will smile and cry with the characters as they become a continuing part of the Cedar Cove Story.
I can't say enough about the honest and wholesome writing that Debbie Macomber does. She is a great writer who has many more stories to tell. Her books are heartwarming and full of love and friendship. They are light, easy reads with great romance and wonderful characters.
The first nine books in the Cedar Cove series, including 50 Harbor Street are available now from your favorite bookseller. The 10th book will be released soon.
I am giving this one 5 out of 5 apples from my book bag! show less

Less than best writing but enough for a person to want to find out what happens. Cliff and Grace get married by eloping which surprised me, Cliff's son still looking for money, Roy finds out it is the daughter given up for adoption writing the postcards which was their only guess, Linette does decide the stuttering cowboy is better than a doctor, Rachel gives in to loving Nate the Navy rich kid, bedridden Maryellen has money problems causing stress for Jon, lighthouse burns down. Each short chapter about some character.
