Star Wars: The Princess and the Scoundrel

THE PRINCESS AND THE SCOUNDREL picks up immediately during the end of Return of the Jedi, as the Rebellion is celebrating the destruction of the second Death Star and the death of the Emperor. Han decides that there’s no time like the present to not only propose to Leia, but also to marry her, so a ceremony is held right there in the Ewok village. Mon Mothma arranges a honeymoon of sorts for Leia and Han aboard the newly launched Chandrila Star Line starcruiser, the Halcyon, as both a getaway for the happy couple, but also as a way to make good optics for the newly emerging Republic; if Leia is comfortable enough to be going on her honeymoon, obviously the Galaxy is safe from the Empire. Right? The happy couple discovers that may not show more entirely be the case, and take it upon themselves to put their honeymoon aside to save day again.

Beth Revis (@bethrevis) has written a great Star Wars novel. I had expected there to be more happening before the wedding, but I appreciate that happening almost immediately, and the majority of the book happening during their honeymoon. One of the things that I’ve really enjoyed reading (both here and in Bloodlines by Claudia Gray) is Leia’s inner struggle to reconcile that Darth Vader is her biological father, and what that means to her, to the people immediately around her, and to her position in the New Republic. I think Revis really touched well on that topic here, as Leia is really struggling here as the news is so new to her. Also seeing a softer side to Han, as he realizes exactly how much Leia means to him, is a nice growth of his character. It would be Leia and Han if they didn’t have their fights, though, and Revis lays the groundwork even this early in their marriage for their eventually separation, as it’s clear neither will ever truly be able to put their pasts behind them. Essential reading for any Star Wars fan.

Perfect perfect Han and Leia book! Loved it! They've always been my favorite Star Wars characters and quite frankly, the whole reason I fell in love with Star Wars in the first place. And Beth Revis knows how to write them well. Great banter and a beautiful wedding scene; very romantic and just terrific fun. I love how it picks up right on the forest moon of Endor at the end of ROTJ. There are humorous moments with Ewoks and Threepio, and callbacks to characters and locations from some of the recent books, tying everything together nicely. When the action and danger picks up, it was all very fast-paced and fun to ride along. A lovely dip back into the classic Star Wars universe.

Not quite what I was expecting. Based on the cover I was expecting some smutty Han and Leia fanfiction - but there wasn't really much romance in this book. The book opens with the two of them getting married and then going on their honeymoon. In true Leia fashion, she treats their honeymoon like a diplomatic mission and hopes to show the galaxy that the New Republic is thriving and doing well. Really though - they know that the Empire isn't really defeated - just because Darth Vader is dead doesn't mean the Empire has stopped functioning. Their honeymoon ends up turning into an adventure - nothing ever is what it seems. Meh - a little slow and not nearly enough romance for me!

This was a really fun book. It really felt like a continuation of the Star Wars story, immediately following the events of Episode VI.

Han and Leia are married and about to embark on a well-deserved honeymoon following the defeat of the Empire. However, what starts out as a relaxing intergalactic cruise turns into something more sinister and dark. Can Han and Leia save the day?

Our favorite characters from the Star Wars series return and are just as loveable as ever in this fun, fast-paced read.

3.4 - this is my first foray in the Star Wars EU and I enjoyed it for what it was. Both Leia and Han are cool characters with an interesting dynamic. Although I had some issues with this book, none of them deterred me from reading it in bite-sized chunks (Not binge able though). I know that other novels in the EU are more highly praised, so I’m looking forward to read them.

This was so fun--the narration was great with real SW sounds and effects. Although my inner child is disappointed this isn't more of a romance, it felt true to the characters.

1 star for the cover and 1 star because it is Han and Leia.

Where should I begin? I was hoping for the witty bantering between Han and Leia. All I got was a flat conversation between the two that felt so forced and 2 dimensional.

The plot was Bespin. Just fleshed out, but still a recycling of plot points in the original trilogy. And a lot of miscommunication between Han and Leia tiptoeing around each other.

Luke did not even feel authentic at the beginning of the novel.

I had to keep reminding myself this is after the battle of Yavin, and emotions are running high . . . Danger is seen everywhere.

I liked:

The wedding on Endor.
Leia is working through the acceptance that she is Vader's daughter.
Han, trying to figure out how he will fit into show more his wife's political career.

This novel could have been at least 150 pages less than it is. It read very young adults. I felt this is a weak entry to Star Wars and a prelude to what had happened in the sequel trilogy - the separation of Han and Leia. show less
