This story, from Murakami's "Men Without Women" collection of stories gave me the insight I needed to understand readers' passion for his work. I listened to the audiobook version of "First Person Singular" last year and - as much as I wanted to love it - I found it mostly underwhelming. I wondered where the disconnect was for me, because many of Murakami's favorite subjects (jazz, baseball, The Beatles) are right in my wheelhouse.

So, when this edition of the story that led to the Oscar-winning film became available, I gave Mr. Murakami another try, and I'm really glad I did. This story was evocative and rich. His use of language, the themes of grief and potential vengeance, the simplicity of the story - and storytelling - all really show more struck me.

I'm eager to dig more deeply into his work now, as well as spend 3 hours with the film sometime soon.
