The origin of the Takenouchi-Hangan-Ryu is traceable as far back as Minamoto-no-Yoshitsue. It was fouded by Nishikawa Kyusaburo Ryuchosai in 1715. At the time, Ryuchosai was the instructor swordsman in the service of Feudal Lord Matsudaira Too-too-mi-no-kami-(in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture), and later Owari Dainagon (chief councilor of state) Tokugawa Yoshinori happened to visti Amagasaki Catel and see Ryuchosai's excellent martial arts of the Takenouchi-Hangan-ryu: bojutsu (staff art), kenjutsu (fencing), hei-ho (martial strategy), bushi-do (the precepts of th samurai)and so on. He was so impressed that he allowed Ryuchosai, as a rewasrd, to rename his ryu (martial school) 'Takenouchi-Hangan-Ryu' after Kuroo Hangan show more Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune.
