Anthony Maurice Frederick Bullimore was born in Southend-on-Sea, England on January 15, 1939. He owned a nightclub called the Bamboo Club from 1966 until a fire forced its closing in 1977. He also had an import-export business. He entered his first solo trans-Atlantic race in 1976 and was England's Yachtsman of the Year in 1985. At the age of 57, show more he undertook the 1996-97 Vendée Globe, a solo around-the-world yacht race, in a 60-foot ketch named the Exide Challenger. A storm in the Southern Ocean caused his sailboat to capsize and he was trapped for four days underneath the sailboat before being rescued. His book, Saved, was published in 1997.
