The law is about justiceâ??not grace. But perhaps ranger Annie Pederson can find a way to have both.

As if the last few months haven't been hard enoughâ??complete with threats on her life and the return of her first love, Jonâ??Annie has to figure out whether or not to believe a woman who claims to be her sister, Sarah, who was abducted twenty-four years ago at age five. Annie's eight-year-old daughter, Kylie, has plenty of questions about what's going on in her mother's lifeâ??but there are some stories Annie doesn't want uncovered.

As Annie grapples with how to heal the gulf between her and her would-be sister and make room in her daughter's life for Jon, she's professionally distracted by the case of yet another missing hiker in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. A woman named Michelle Fraser has now been abducted, and though the woman's estranged husband is at the top of their suspect list, Annie and her colleagues will need to dig deeper to determine whether these recent mysteries are truly as unrelated as they seem.

Another great book by Colleen Coble! There's mystery, suspense, intrigue, and even a little love story! ( )

So, this book wasn't bad. The mystery was intriguing, the setting was nice, and the cover was really pretty. Honestly though, I had a hard time staying focused on this book, and just couldn't finish it.
It often felt like I was watching the story play out from a distance instead of being swept into the story. Michelle, Annie and Jon were relatable, but I could not stand Taylor and her self-absorbed attitude.
I could totally relate to Kylie and her love for chocolate, though! ( )

I was unaware this was part of a series so it took a bit to get into. Eventually I got into the flow of who's who and the plot became interesting. All in all a good book. ( )

Dark of Night by Colleen Coble is the second book in the Annie Pederson series. The story revolves around widow Annie, her daughter Kylie, her boyfriend Jon and her long lost sister Taylor/Sarah.

When Annie was a young girl, her younger sister was kidnapped and was not seen again until recently. Taylor, whose real name is Sarah is a bitter woman, who only wants revenge against Annie because she felt that Annie could have protected her when she was kidnapped. Annie was not able to as she was injured and left for dead.

Kylie's father and husband is deceased, and Kylie is not happy that her mother is back with Jon, they had had a relationship and it turns out that Jon is actually Kylie's father. Kylie is very distant and rather mean to Jon. Annie and Jon just feel that it will take time, and they are trying to find the right time to tell Kylie that the man who she called Daddy in not her real father.

In order for Annie to know if Taylor is her sister Sarah, a DNA test would let them both know if Taylor is really Sarah. The relationship between Annie and Taylor is not the greatest and is further tested when Taylor does something that really tests the relationship between them.

There is a woman, Michelle that turns up missing. She tries to escape on an ATV along with another missing woman, Grace. They end up in an accident and Michelle, who suffered a broken leg in the accident is carried away by a man. We don't find out who the man is and his motive for keeping Michelle a prisoner until the end of the book.

This story is a romantic suspense novel with engaging characters and a story line that was well thought out. I did not read the first in the series but that did not deter me from understanding who the characters were and how they related to each other. It was a fast read and I really enjoyed it.
    I give it 4 stars!
