Après l'histoire de la famille, Philippe Ariès a consacré ses recherches à l'histoire des attitudes de l'homme occidental devant la mort. Il livre ici l'essentiel de ses découvertes, à savoir comment on est passé progressivement de la mort familière, " apprivoisée ", au Moyen Âge, à la mort refoulée, maudite et " interdite " dans les sociétés contemporaines. Fuir la mort, telle semble être la tentation de l'Occident.
