Typical Steel. A romance based novel based on Spencer Brooke, a driven and independent woman who runs her family's iconic department store, Brooke’s. A very formulaic (for Steel) plot--damsel needs help but at first repels help offered in the form of business investment, but then softens. A much needed reading break for me! Seemed like old home week as I read Steel almost exclusively in my early 20's. 320 pages
Worthy Opponents by Danielle Steel is a story that spans three generations. I thought Worthy Opponents was an easy-to-read story. I was immediately drawn into the tale. I like the author’s casual writing style. I enjoyed the wonderful descriptions of Brooke’s. It sounds like a very special store. If I had the money, I would want to shop there. I liked the majority of the characters in the story (Spencer’s father and wife were the exceptions). Spencer is a strong, smart woman with a good heart. I liked how she wanted to preserve her grandfather’s legacy. Spencer is a woman who works to overcome the obstacles thrown in her path. She had a great attitude. Spencer sees no reason why she could not have a career and a family. It takes show more hard work, courage, love, and help from the right people. I enjoyed the heartwarming ending. Worthy Opponents is a story about dedication, hard work, family, second chances, and love. The first couple of chapters are the backstory. They set the stage for the rest of the book. There is repetition of the main details. I am not sure why author’s feel the need to repeat key details (do they think we forget). I have been reading Danielle Steel’s novels since I was twelve years old. I am always eager to read her latest creation. Worthy Opponents is a great escape. I like it when I begin reading and the world falls away. For a few hours, I am immersed in a different world. Worthy Opponents is an uplifting tale about a family legacy, a resilient woman, a special store, a disheartening hardship, a money man, and a lasting love. show less
Worthy Opponents by Danielle Steel kept me entertained while reading about Spencer, a very strong woman who doesn't let others talk her into doing anything against her beliefs, well maybe one individual. Danielle Steel sure can pull you into her story with full force so that you don't want to do anything but read. Spencer sure is a very well rounded woman with a heart of gold, helping the homeless with so much compassion. Loved reading about Spencer and Mike and their interaction with each other. A love story for sure!
I usually like Danielle Steel’s books, but this one just didn’t work for me. It was a big letdown. The title, Worthy Opponents, felt off because there wasn’t much tension between the main characters, Spencer Brooke and Mike Weston.

Spencer Brooke has been running her family’s luxury department store for years. She cares about the store and wants to keep it the way her grandfather did. Over time, though, the area where the store is located becomes rough with a lot of homeless people and crime. Spencer is stubborn and doesn’t want to give up any part of her company, but she knows they need to move and can’t afford it. That’s where Mike Weston comes in. He’s a good-looking business owner known for turning struggling show more companies around.

Even though this book is pretty short, it took a long time to get to the main plot. The first two chapters were just long background stories for the main characters, and honestly, I found them boring and unnecessary. When the story finally started, the writing felt too simple, so I couldn’t really connect with it. The romance didn’t feel believable, and it seemed like a lot happened but nothing really did. I’ll keep reading Steel’s books, but this one just wasn’t for me.

A building is a building, but it took Spencer the whole book to figure that out!
Nice romance with nice characters.
I actually did not finish this book. I was surprised to find it poorly written. I felt the sentences and thoughts were very stilted and did not draw me into the story at all.
