When (if) covid ends and normalcy returns, my husband and I decided that we want to visit Greece. We are preparing by reading and taking Great Courses about the ancients and searching for books about contemporary Greece. (Any recommendations?)

The Great Courses series on Ancient Greece suggested Martin's book as a course companion. I had read it before and enjoyed it more this time around. It is a well written, high readable survey of Greek history from Prehistoric to Hellenistic times. One of Martin's strengths is Social history. I found his analysis of sex, gender, and the role of women in Athenian society fascinating. His examination of Greek religion and the Spartan social structure and its frightening impact on everyday life is show more insightful. Overall, Martin's text is a fine introductory survey. show less
Audiobook.

A solid review of the broad scope of ancient Greek history. A good books for a beginner in the subject, or for a refresher. It did an especially good job of moving beyond political/military history to discuss art, culture, and philosophy, which I find undergraduate textbook-like books tend to shove into the margins.
Interesting, well written book about Ancient Greece from the Minoans to Cleopatra, Last Pharaoh of Egypt. This is supposed to be an introductory text, but includes a great deal more information than the usual introductory texts. This book also includes several time lines, maps and photographs of vases, statues and coins.

If you don't know anything or only know a little bit about Ancient Greece, this is the book to read.
An excellent one volume introduction to ancient Greece, from archaic to Hellenistic times. Martin writes well, and the book covers all the major themes, events and battles of the periods in question. This is one of the first books I read on ancient Greece and, as you can now see from my library, its one of my favourite subjects; thanks, not least, to this great little book. Highly recommended.
Incredible retelling of about a thousand years of the history of civilization. Talks about what we know with maps and time tables where appropriate, expands on what we don't by listing the clues we have. Amazing.
Great introduction to Ancient Greece. A little dry at times.
Amazing introduction to Ancient Greece. Taught me so much.
