The setting is Ireland, as are most of his books, and the subject matter of dementia and relationships are the main themes. I've read three of Graham Norton's books so far and can say I enjoyed the others more than this one. Most of the characters were believable and well described but there is a subplot about three quarters of the way in that's ridiculous, in my opinion. 3.5 stars

For what it's worth I very much enjoyed Holding and could recommend that one for those interested in Irish village life and interactions with the community.

After her divorce, teacher Carol finds love again with Declan and moves into his lovely townhouse in the small town of Ballytoor. However Declan develops dementia and his adult children place him in a home and evict Carol as they sell the beloved house. Luckily Carol has parents willing to buy the house for her but a mysterious smell leads to a shocking discovery. How is this linked to the disappearance of Declan's wife many years ago?
National Treasure Graham Norton has produced another depiction of small-town life in rural Ireland which does have a few teeth. Despite the plot twists and actions of the characters the pace is gently and the narrative never seems to be more than soft. There are lots of themes touched on here so the reader show more is challenged but it almost seems to be incidental to a great story. show less

Not as good as his others. Unbelievable plot

Carol Crottie, noch keine 50, verliert ihr Zuhause. Genauer gesagt: das Haus ihres langjährigen Lebensgefährten Declan, mit dem sie fast zehn Jahre zusammenlebte – die letzten beiden als seine Pflegerin. Doch dann schritten seine Kinder ein: Sie brachten ihren Vater ohne Carols Wissen in ein Pflegeheim und leiteten den Verkauf des Hauses ein. Und da sie eine umfassende Vollmacht besitzen und Carol „nur“ die Partnerin ohne Trauschein ist, bleibt ihr nichts anderes übrig, als auszuziehen.
Also kehrt sie – zähneknirschend – ins Elternhaus zurück. Ihre Eltern waren noch nie Fans von Declan, doch wie seine Kinder mit Carol umgehen, empört sie so sehr, dass sie kurzerhand beschließen: Wir kaufen das Haus für Carol zurück. show more Klingt erstmal wie ein Happy End. Aber natürlich wird damit alles eher komplizierter – denn das Haus hat buchstäblich eine Leiche im Keller.
Carol steht im Zentrum der Geschichte, doch auch das „Personal“ drumherum wird liebevoll, facettenreich und zum Teil köstlich schrullig gezeichnet. Was bei einem weniger talentierten Autor schnell in Klischees abrutschen könnte – geldgierige Kinder, bemühte Eltern, passive Protagonistin – bekommt hier Tiefe und Nuancen. Niemand ist einfach nur gut oder böse, und gerade das macht die Figuren so glaubwürdig. Selbst Carols Eltern, die anfangs nerven wie ein tropfender Wasserhahn, wachsen einem bald ans Herz. Und Carol selbst? Die möchte man gelegentlich kräftig schütteln und ihr zurufen: "Mach endlich mal, was DU willst!"
Trotz des ernsten Themas – Demenz, Verlust, Verdrängung – ist der Ton überraschend leicht. Es gibt Humor, feine Ironie und großartige Dialoge, vor allem zwischen Carol und ihrer Mutter. Dazu ein angenehmer Schuss Überzeichnung, der das Ganze herrlich unterhaltsam macht.
Ein rundum schöner Roman mit Herz, Witz und leisen Tönen. 😊 show less
