Description

In 1947, returning to the England with two young children to support, Margaret Durrell starts a boarding house in Bournemouth. But any hopes of respectability are dashed as the tenants reveal themselves to be a host of eccentrics -- from a painter of nudes to a pair of glamorous young nurses whose late-night shifts combined with an ever-revolving roster of gentleman callers leading to a neighbourhood rumour that Margo is running a brothel. Margo's own two sons, Gerry and Nicholas, prove to show more be every bit as mischievous as their famous Uncle Gerald -- and he himself returns periodically with weird and wonderful animals, from marmosets to monkeys, that are quite unsuitable for life in a Bournemouth garden. But Margo is soon distracted from the madness when she falls in love with one of her lodgers... show less

While I am sure that Margery Durrell's reminiscences were found in an attic I detect the hand of Gerald Durrell in this book. His name appears first on the back cover.
This book is amusing in the style of My Family and other animals and tells the story of a post war lodging house of a type that no longer exists. Quentin Crisp would be at home there.
Like many, I was curious about whatever did happen to Margo. Many of us have read Gerald's books, seen the British TV series, and are very fond of that family.
I've seen others say that Margo isn't a writer like Gerald or Lawrence. If the writing had been just ho-hum, I would have finished the book and given it three stars. But as it was, there was an astronomical excess of words that made it really difficult for me to get through it, to figure out what the hell she was saying, who was who... It was a lot of work, and it went no where.
The style of the story changed from a more descriptive story of what was happening at the start to a more internal writers view in the latter part. I did enjoy the trials and tribulations of being a landlady for a bording house in the late 1940s. Her lodgers did appear to be quite odd at times. Her famous brother, Gerald Durrell, does make several appearances and leaves a collection of monkeys, who escape to make disorder around the neighbourhood.
I did not finish this book but may come back to this another time as I'd love to know Margo's story. She doesn't have quite the writing skills of brother Gerald but she's definitely and interesting character!
