Gyo, Volume 1

This was my introduction to Junji Ito's work. My husband gave me both volumes very early in our relationship around 2011/12. It's in my top 3 favorite Junji Ito stories, with my first being the Amigara Fault- which is included in this series as a bonus story. Reading Gyo and the Amigara Fault changed my life. I had never really taken a deep dive into Junji Ito's work until then, and I left a changed person. An absolute legend of horror and imagination- his influence for writing this story was, and I kid you not, the simple idea of "Hey, sharks would be scarier with legs." It wasn't really intended to mean anything else or and wasn't some warped commentary on evolution or nature fighting back, but it ended up that way due to its massive show more fan-following. There is not one element of the story that overshadows the other- it all flows organically and is paced at a satisfactory speed. Not short on Gore, violence, disgust, suspense- Gyo will leave you so engrossed that you can almost smell the repulsive creatures you find the characters running from. Junji Ito's art, story telling, and concepts are unmatched. This is one of the greats in horror. If you need any title for your library or need a good creep factor- then this is the story for you! Oh my god, my whole body is shivering with horror. I loved it so much.

This is the comic book that really got me into reading Japanese comics. *_____* A STORY WOULD READ AGAIN (AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN)
