Description

Isabel "Izzy" Crane and her family have just relocated to Sleepy Hollow, the town made famous by--and obsessed with--Washington Irving's legend of the Headless Horseman. But city slicker-skeptic Izzy has no time for superstition as she navigates life at a new address, a new school, and, with any luck, with new friends. Ghost stories aren't real, after all... Then Izzy is pulled into the orbit of the town's teen royalty, Vicky Van Tassel (yes, that Van Tassel) and loveable varsity-level show more prankster Croc Byun. Vicky's weariness with her family connection to the legend turns to terror when the trio begins to be haunted by the Horseman himself, uncovering a curse set on destroying the Van Tassel line. Now, they have only until Halloween night to break it--meaning it's a totally inconvenient time for Izzy to develop a massive crush on the enigmatic Vicky. Can Izzy's practical nature help her face the unknown--or only trip her up? As the calendar runs down to the 31st, Izzy will have to use all of her wits and work with her new friends to save Vicky and uncover the mystery of the legendary Horseman of Sleepy Hollow--before it's too late. New York Times-bestselling writer Shannon Watters (Lumberjanes) and debut author Branden Boyer-White are joined by artist Berenice Nelle (Wanderlicht) in this coming-of-age tale, homage, and a spin-off of the classic Legend of Sleepy Hollow and everyone's favorite headless specter. show less

It's October and Izzy Crane has just moved with her parents to Sleepy Hollow where the residents of the village lean HARD into the Legend. Izzy is less than enthused by all the headless horseman love until she meets Vicky Van Tassel who is involved in every one of Sleepy Hollow's events. However, Izzy and Vicky's blossoming relationship is complicated by a curse on the Van Tassel family that threatens Vicky's life.

This graphic novel is a fun riff on the elements of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, while also encompassing an adorable queer romance and plenty of humour. The art is gorgeous and, as I'd expect from one of the co-creators of Lumberjanes, the story is sweet and funny with just a dash of spooky. Hollow would be a fantastic show more Halloween read. Recommended. show less
This is a really fun Legend of Sleepy Hollow retelling (or reimagining?) where we follow the descendants of some of the people in the original story (which actually happened). The art was a lot of fun, and the characters were wonderfully diverse (variety of non-white characters, including a Latine MC; side character who uses mobility aids, queer MC and sapphic relationship, etc.) without the diversity seeming at all out of place. It's a really great atmospheric read perfect for the spooky season!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

This story was so fun! This feel of this story reminded me a lot of Hocus Pocus or Halloweentown. It has a great blend of spookiness while also remaining pretty low stakes. A perfect Halloween season read! The art style in this graphic novel is fantastic, I love how everything is drawn. The cast is wonderfully diverse and full of very fun characters. The main trio themselves have such a fun dynamic with each other. Also, the writer clearly did their research! Without spoiling the story, there is something a side character talks about, that made me realize she's a practitioner of the craft! How lovely! It's so rare to see pagans' or show more practitioners' magical practices accurately depicted in stories! It's a small thing, but it made me really happy. The story itself feels well-paced to me, nothing is too rushed. The romance plot, felt a bit sidelined, but it's honestly not a make-or-break thing. I'm just delighted there is LGBT romance at all! All in all, this is a fun modern retelling of the original "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". A perfect graphic novel to curl up and read on a chilly autumn day! show less
Another book about which I could find naught to complain. A play on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, many generations after the fact, with the parts "recast" as a teenage descendant, her sweet lunky friend, and the new girl in town who happens to bear the Crane surname. (I did wonder whether that would be significant, though it wasn't.) The budding romance between the two girls was fun and felt organic, and though the whole thing was wrapped up neatly in what felt like no time at all, it was the perfect bite-sized tale with no further elaboration needed. The art, as well, as attractive, and I appreciated the diversity of race and ability among the characters.
A moody and beautiful retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with a modern twist and digital-age angst. The characters felt real and relatable, and the spooky atmosphere was perfect for fans of gothic stories. Great blend of classic and current.
A graphic novel version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow written by one of the authors who brought us The Lumberjanes. And it's just as awesomesauce as that sounds.

Absolutely loved this modern day retelling of The Headless Horseman. Lots of historical background brought into it, along with a LOT of humor. Izzy Crane moves back to her mom’s home town and meets Vicky, a descendent of the Van Tassel’s and Croc, a goofy jock who offers up a lot of humor. A great twist on the story, including a sweet love connection between Izzy and Vicky. This is a perfect book to read as the Halloween season is upon us! Great addition to the library collection.
