I was looking for something spooky to read to get the ball rolling for my month of Hallowreads. I decided on a collection of Poe's stories because I'd only ever read of his what was required of me in school. Remembering that I liked his style, I thought this would be a good start to my month-long venture into the horror genre.

This was a great collection and the added spookiness of having Basil Rathbone and Vincent Price narrating the stories was fantastic. I found some new favorites and can't wait for my next Book Talk session at my local library!

I will say, the one thing that bothered me about the collection was that there were no introductions or chapter headings between stories. There were several times where there wasn't enough of show more a pause to realize that one story ended and another had begun. I ended up just googling the first line of each story I didn't know and keeping track that way. But I could see where that would be a big issue to someone listening to these. show less
I have definitely overdosed on this trip down memory lane. It will be at least a few weeks or months before I pick another Poe or listen to Vincent Price or Basel Rathbone again. I was up all night listening, and woke bleary-eyed, determined to move on to another genre. This morning on my walk I listened to a suspenseful, psychological thriller with a crafty protagonist who bests his enemies in an exciting final twist - The Fantastic Mr. Fox (how far would you go to save your family?) I think I'm through with Dahl for a while too!
Great stories, but the cuts between stories was so poorly done and seemed a rush job. No titles or introductions to the stories. It felt rushed.
The works of Edgar Allen Poe read by Basil Rathbone and Vincent Price. VINCENT PRICE, PEOPLE! I grew up watching those old Hammer Horror Poe adaptations starring Price, so hearing that voice immediately takes me back to Saturday afternoons when I was 8.
As mentioned others--Price and Rathbone provide a masterful performance; however, the formatting is grossly unusable, especially to those not already intimately familiar with the works of Poe. I have little to add by way of content review...Poe's masterful. Copyright 2000 by Harper Collins Publishers, this performance is so poor that it makes you wonder how it could have lasted for 14 years and stupid people like me keep buying it.
This was perfect!

Twenty two stories and poems by Edgar Allen Poe including many of his most famous works.

It includes all three Poe creations that are on the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list.
The Fall of the House of Usher – new for me
The Purloined Letter (Reread)
The Pit and the Pendulum (Reread)

I can't think of any more perfect reader/performers than Vincent Prince and Basil Rathbone.
This is a keeper that I'll listen to again next year.
Not even Vincent Price could save this for me. It's official; while I enjoy some of his stories and poems, overall, I am not a fan of Poe.
