This volume deals mainly with the yachts of the English and American rich and famous of the 19th century. The first chapter deals with how yachts were used for statecraft in both the ancient and medieval worlds. The second chapter deals with the beginnings of the English yacht clubs and their culture. The third and fourth chapters deal with the beginnings of the American yachts and the robber barons that commissioned them. Chapter four also deals with the start of the American yacht clubs. The fifth chapter deals with the European yacht clubs just prior to world war I, and the last chapter deals with how the great depression brought about the end of the yachts of the glided age.
