Having found a measure of peace among the dwarves in the reclaimed Mithral Hall, Drizzt begins to know contentment for perhaps the first time in his tumultuous life. But for the dark elf renegade from a city ruled by priestesses of a demon goddess, no peace can long last. It is Lolth herself, the dreaded Queen of the Demonweb Pits, who musters her followers to pour up from the black depths of the Underdark to reclaim for their goddess the one soul that had managed to elude her: the soul of Drizzt DoUrden. -- Jacket cover.… (more)

Better than Books 2-6, but still not that great. I am glad Salvatore is bringing in more of the drow society as that is much more interesting than goody-two-shoes Drizzt and his companions, or even his weirdly honorific nemesis Entreri, which take up too much of the novel. ( )

Wow, so I remember these books being pretty basic but this is just bad. The characters are beyond shallow and the writing is poor. I guess there's some things you just can't go back to. ( )

Not my favourite instalment in the series so far. The characterisation feels very off compared to previous books, especially around Wulfgar. The appearance of my favourite antagonists kept me going, though, and I'm greatly hoping for more of Jarlaxle in future books. ( )

The dwarves have taken control of the mines. Drizz't's sister regains Lolth's favor so she attempts to hunt down Drizz't with Entreri's help [the assassin]. Regis is kidnapped and used as a pawn and the group must enter the Underdark to rescue him and to free Drizz't from the Drow. Cattie-Bri and Wulfgar have a falling out and Wulfgar apparently dies while in battle with one of Lolth's servants.

Everything was telegraphed about 4 chapters ahead, so nothing was a surprise. Didn't really enjoy this. ( )

Book description
Life is good for Drizzt Do'Urden, better than it ever has been for the beleaguered dark elf. His dearest friend, the dwarf Bruenor, has reclaimed his throne, and his adventuring companions, Wulfgar and Catti-brie, are to be wed in the spring. Even the halfling Regis has returned. All the friends are united in the safety and prosperity of Mithril Hall, where streams of silver mithril run deep and dwarven hammers bang out the solemn rhythms of ancient and unending songs.

But Drizzt did not achieve this state of peace without leaving powerful enemies in his wake. Lloth, the dreaded Spider Queen deity of the evil dark elves, counts herself among them and has vowed to end the drow's days of pleasant security.
