Description

The first edition of The Age of the Vikings provoked considerable controversy and discussion. It was widely accepted that Professor Sawyer had done a great service to Viking studies by his criticism of the established order. In the light of this controversy and of recent research he has made use of this second edition to develop some arguments further and to amend others. The chapters to which the most new material has been added are those on the Viking ships, their coin boards, raids and show more settlement. The reconstruction of the Gokstad ship has been improved and the Skuldelev ships taken into account, with consequent changes in the discussion of late Viking-period ships. The author modifies his interpretation of hoards as evidence of disorder, makes some important changes in the discussion of the armies that attacked Ethelred's England and provides a greatly improved reconstruction of the Danish colonization of Britain. His final survey of the Viking period has been extensively rewritten on the basis of recent research. The book contains several new plates and line drawings; footnotes and bibliography have been fully updated. show less
