Description
'The Two Revolutions' explores how the rise of the internet shaped transgender identity and activism from the 1980s to the present. Through extensive archival research and media archeology, Avery Dame-Griff reconstructs the manifold digital networks of transgender activists, cross-dressing computer hobbyists, and others interested in gender nonconformity who incited the second revolution of the title: the ascendance of 'transgender' as an umbrella identity in the mid-1990s. The author argues show more that digital communications sparked significant momentum within what would become the transgender movement, but also further cemented existing power structures. Covering both a historical period that is largely neglected within the history of computing, and the poorly understood role of technology in queer and trans social movements, the text offers a new understanding of both revolutions. show lessTags

"Perhaps the text’s first and most obvious use is its role in adding to the still-to-be-developed landscape of transgender history. ... Equally, Dame-Griff offers a novel take on writing Internet history. ... the most exciting use of Dame-Griff’s book comes in what it teaches about engaging in digital ethnography and forensics when producing inherently incomplete histories."

"great work at integrating data and materials from a wealth ofdifferent archives into a succinct and comprehensive chronology of the digital transgender movement that is a first of its kind, setting it apart from other transgender studies or media studies works. It is also a great introduction for anyone doing research focused on Internet histories or the history of the transgender community show more in the United States. ""leaves the reader hungry for further research from Dame-Griff and explanation as to what has happened since the late 2000s" show less
