As I recall, it was about a boy who is blinded in a car accident in which his parents are killled. He is is sent to live with relatives who decide it would be a good idea to go for a holiday by the lake. He somehow gets caught in a bushfire with their dog as a companion. I can't remember the rest, but it was a bloody good read.
