This is a very dog example of a modern fantasy book because it is about a dog's inbreak in a mice community. The book talks about a prehistoric dog that is attracted by a barbecue smell and intrudes the mice community. Later the mice figure out a solution--bathing the dog which let the dog runs away. The story connects the reality which makes the story vivid. Also, the media is appealing--adding real pictures of a dog mice. I really like the plot and the media of the book. Teachers can read the book to students to make them laugh and also teach them something about dogs. The book is suitable for k-4th grade students.
This is a very silly book and really pretty stupid unless you love dogs. The author says the stars are all his pets. His adorable mutt takes center stage as Dogzilla. All the scenes are photos of the dog and/or other animals with the surroundings of the scene painted on. It's obvious that the photos are just random pictures taken of this little guy/gal, usually grinning re-purposed for this book, but somehow the effect is freakin' hilarious. The beast is a mixed breed, chunky, kind of funny looking and probably older unlike most dogs in children's books and his goofy maw with tongue hanging out brings a smile to my face every time. The mice only add to the zaniness, kind of like the mice in Babe. The story is cute and taken with the show more photo montages makes a delightful story for a dog lover like me. (I make no such claims for cat lovers.) show less

This book is so adorable. I remember the first time I read it was in 3rd grade. *sigh* Good times, good times. Pilkey delivers the humor as always. I really like the twist he added by making his own pets part of the story. =)
Very funny book that spoofs Godzilla. The mice in Mouseopolis are having a barbeque when they are "attacked" by Dogzilla. The Big Cheese leads the mice in their brave efforts to save themselves from the monster.
Young readers (and old) will really like this book. The pictures are an amusing combination of real photos of mice and dog, and cartoon backgrounds.
Teaching points include bravery as a character trait, point of view, and personification of animals.

I really liked this book because it was entertaining and just a fun book. I liked the illustrations in this story because they were real pictures of animals in an unreal setting. For example, there is a picture of a real dog coming out of a cartoon volcano. I also liked the language in this story because it was very descriptive and offered a bunch of details to enhance the story. For example, "A gentle wind carried the mouth-watering smell into the distance," there are several adjective and descriptive words to describe the events in the story. The big idea of this story is simply to entertain the reader.
I read this book years ago as a kid and recently, something spurred my memory of this book and its companion, Kat Kong (which I read together with this book) and it really is a very silly book. I decided to look up the author and lo and behold he's the same dude who wrote Captain Underpants. Makes a lot of sense... in a good way.
