Julian Hurst, an art dealer and man-about-town, is sent on a cheerless journey from London to Yorkshire. There, for a piddling sum, he must evaluate the art collection of old Mr. Randall, a family client and a notorious skinflint. The reward is the possibility of finding paintings by Clauval, whose work is in great demand. Julian is not disappointed: he finds four Clauval canvasses and, unexpectedly, falls in love with Randall's cook, Alexandra Bell. Fortunes change suddenly when the old man dies, the paintings are lost, and Alexandrra vanishes without a word.
