I'm strolling down memory lane and seeing if there are books I've completely forgotten and need to re-read. This is certainly not one of them, and it's as fresh as I remember it being back when I read it as a kid. Is it Quentin Blake's illustrations that keeps the whimsy of Esio Trot or The Giraffe and The Pelly fresh in my mind? I'm not sure, but I'm facing a sudden flood of warm flashbacks now when looking at this book cover with the BFG's floppy ears.
One of my all-time favorite writers. His books still hold the whimsy and charm that I found in them as a boy. His older, more mature writing is excellent as well, but his writing for children is his best.
This is a great collection because it contains new Quentin Blake illustrations and contains stories like "The Minpins" that are harder to find.

This book includes some of Roald Dahl's poetry (such as his hilarious fairy tale retellings), short stories, excerpts from his children's novels, recipes, letters from fans, and other nice little snippets, like a sheet Dahl filled out about his birthday, favourite colour, food, etc.
While it's not a replacement for reading the complete works of Roald Dahl, it is a lovely tribute to him and a good selection of his works. Personal tributes from some people who knew him well combine with excerpts from his longer books and full-text of some of his shorter works, including some items previously unpublished.
It is a real treat for anyone who loves the wry English wit of Dahl and the quirky illustrations of Quentin Blake, a treasure to read show more time and time again. show less

This is on my shelf in addition to the individual full-length works. The book includes "moments" of his writing--the shorter stories, and extracts from the longer books. A nice volume, but not a complete collection. In fact, I would say it's not a good place to start with Roald Dahl as I believe the longer books are really his best work (thus the 3 stars here and not more).
Roald Dahl is a genius. You must pick up one of his short stories and enjoy every bit of it. This collection is a wonderful selection of stories, with 1 or 2 of my favorites. I would say this would be an excellent place to start to get to know Dahl, if you have never picked up any of his books. Remember... he is the author of such great works as "James and the Giant Peach" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Pure genius.

Roald (pronounced "Roo-aal") was born in Llandaff, South Wales. He had a relatively uneventful childhood and was educated at Repton School. During World War II he served as a fighter pilot and for a time was stationed in Washington, D.C.. Prompted by an interviewer, he turned an account of one of his war experiences into a short story that was show more accepted by the Saturday Evening Post, which were eventually collected in Over to You (1946). Dahl's stories are often described as horror tales or fantasies, but neither description does them justice. He has the ability to treat the horrible and ghastly with a light touch, sometimes even with a humorous one. His tales never become merely shocking or gruesome. His purpose is not to shock but to entertain, and much of the entertainment comes from the unusual twists in his plots, rather than from grizzly details. Dahl has also become famous as a writer of children's stories. In some circles, these works have cased great controversy. Critics have charged that Dahl's work is anti-Semitic and degrades women. Nevertheless, his work continues to be read: Charlie and Chocolate Factory (1964) was made into a successful movie, The BFG was made into a movie in July 2017, and his books of rhymes for children continue to be very popular.
