Description

After twenty years, Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca, but instead of receiving the homecoming he had hoped for finds himself caught in an intense battle of wills with his faithful and long-suffering wife Penelope. When Penelope recognizes him under the guise of a beggar, she becomes furious with him for not trusting her enough to include her in his plans for ridding the palace of the Suitors. As a result, she plays her own game of fictions to make him suffer for this lack of faith, show more inspiring jealousy, self-doubt, and misgivings in her husband, the legendary Homeric hero. This is quite a conscientious piece of alternative fiction delineating a 'what if' scenario adapted from the classic Odyssey. Luigi's greatest achievement is in humanizing the characters of the Illiad and the Odyssey while shearing away all superstitious references to Gods and the like to present what is essentially a more 'human' (read reality) based story.

This is a book which will make you feel uncomfortable. It is a study in human psychology and what-aboutism. The characters in the novel are stuck in a convoluted plane which clashes between fiction and reality. There are references to adultery, betrayal and disloyalty. By the end, it is up to the reader to conclude whether Penelope was indeed faithful to Odysseus or whether show more Odysseus's own suspicious mind is properly summarizing that she was on the cusp of selecting a suitor to supplant him. show less
The story of Odysseus's homecoming, told alternatively from Odysseus's and Penelope's point of view.

For much of this book I felt it was just a re-telling of the second half of the Odyssey which stuck too close to the original. It was only after Odysseus (disguised as the beggar) and Penelope met and the two tricksters start manoeuvring round each other that I really thought we were getting anything new
