I am officially hooked on this series. 🥰🙌

One thing I have to mention right away: Demi Winters includes a recap at the beginning of the book, and it is absolutely genius. More fantasy authors need to do this! When you’re reading a series with a lot of characters, politics, and world-building, having a refresher before diving back in makes such a difference.

Kingdom of Claw picks up after the events of Road of Bones and expands the story in a big way. We continue following Silla and Rey while also getting new characters that broaden the world and raise the stakes. There are secrets being uncovered, alliances being tested, betrayals, mysteries, and plenty of action as the story moves across show more different parts of the world. It’s rare to have a second book be just as good if not better than the first book and this definitely falls on that category, so good! 😊

What I love most about this series is that it’s a true fantasy. Yes, there is romance, and I was definitely invested in certain relationships, but the romance isn’t the entire plot. The world-building, adventure, character growth, political intrigue, and mystery all take center stage, which makes the romantic moments feel even more impactful.

My only minor critique is that the pacing slowed down a bit in the middle. There were a few sections that felt longer than necessary, but I was invested enough in the characters and the world that it never became a major issue.

This series continues to feel incredibly underrated. If you’re looking for a fantasy with Viking-inspired elements, action, mystery, strong character development, a slow-burn romance, and a plot that goes far beyond just the romance, I highly recommend giving The Ashen series a try.

And that ending?!

I’m loving this series so far. I do think the first book was a little more exciting, but I liked the insight into Saga’s life. Following both of the sisters was interesting and I was engaged in both stories. I like how the magic system works but still wish we explored what other people could do with their powers more. I’m excited for the next book to come out next week and can’t wait to read it.
