Description

Loosely based on the director's childhood, this film portrays a precocious fifteen-year-old boy as he journeys from childhood to adulthood, his story of sexual maturation, and the unorthodox relationship he has with his free-spirited mother.

Malle claimed this film was a semi-autobiography of his formative years. There was no incest nor an Italian mother and the time frame was wrong, but the rest is pretty close to his life. He did grow up wealthy, was sick with scarlet fever, and had a close relationship with his mother. The way he portrayed the arrogance and smugness of the Chevalier family says a lot about how Malle remembers the snobbery. The point is well taken. But the famous critic Pauline Kael called this film: mellow and smooth, exhilarating, irresistible, with its supremely logical yet witty and imaginative conclusion. Oh, and: ¨in this context incest isn't serious¨ Come on ! Incest, Pauline, is never not serious. But here are some of other real problems: the show more pacing is erratic, there is an attitude that treats adultery as inconsequential and as a source of sheer comedy, (and yet it was not treated satirically!), and the Oedipal scenes between mother & son become tiresome. The most commercially successful of the New Wave French film directors of the 1950's is Louis Malle. He started directing in the early 1950's, but it was his 1958 erotic film "The Lovers" that gained him recognition. Since then, he has continued to make films that offer surprising, and occasionally shocking, perspectives on conventional morality. show more "Murmur of the Heart" (1971), is about mother-son incest, and the controversial "Pretty Baby" (1978), his first American film, is set in a New Orleans brothel and features a child. His second American film, the critically acclaimed "Atlantic City" (1980), compassionately depicts the romance between an old man and a young woman. Other notable Malle films are "Lacombe, Lucien" (1973), "My Dinner with Andre" (1981), and "Au Revoir les Enfants" (1987), his account of children growing up in Nazi-occupied France. "Damage" (1992) is another shocking story of a father's obsessive love affair with his son's fiancee, and the eventual destruction that results to all the characters.
