What a peculiar book.
Goldschmidt is een bioloog die aan het Victoriameer onderzoek doet naar de Furu, een kleine vis, waarvan het opmerkelijke is dat er in dit ene meer honderden soorten van voorkomen. Je hebt Furu's die insekten eten, Furu's die algen eten, Furu's die slakken eten, Furu's die garnalen eten en ook Furu's die andere vissen eten. Goldschmidt is gefascineerd door de Furu's, vangt ze en beschrijft ze ijverig.
In het boek houdt Goldschmidt zich bezig met de evolutietheorie en wat de Furu daarover duidelijk maakt. Aan het eind van zijn verblijf verdwijnen de Furu, een leger van enorme Nijlbaarzen heeft ze opgegeten. De Nijlbaars is uitgezet ten behoeve van de visserij en dat blijkt op een ecologische ramp uit te lopen. De wetenschappelijke show more overpeinzingen worden afgewisseld met korte stukjes over hoe het is om als veldwerker in Tanzania te leven. Het boek is erg interessant, zeer prettig leesbaar geschreven en een absolute aanrader voor iedereen met ook maar een beetje interesse in de biologie.
