Gabriel Lacey prevents a mugging, and to his surprise discovers that he has saved a fine lady. The next day she summons him to her and asks him to investigate her husband's recent murder. Lacey is already half in love with her and adores mysteries, and immediately begins his detective work. He uncovers a conspiracy stranger and darker than he had bargained for.
I love Captain Lacey, who is very competent, very self-contained, and prey to fits of severe melancholia. His relationships with Lord and Lady Brandon, his former mentors/protectors/friends, are tangled and fascinating. And I love the way other characters react to him, like how Grenville and Denis view him as something strange and slightly disturbing. It makes me wonder how he show more appears from the outside, instead of from his internal monologue.
I look forward to the next installment of this series! show less

I stayed up late last night finishing this one. A Regimental Murder is the second in the Captain Lacey mystery series. In this one Lacey rescues a beautiful widow named Lydia Westin from an attacker on the street. Her husband, she explains, was to stand trial for murder supposedly committed on the battlefield. While everyone else believes Colonel Westin fell down the stairs to his death, she confides the truth to Captain Lacey -- he had been found murdered in his bed. Lacey is besotted with the cool widow so agrees to investigate and try to clear Colonel Westin's name.
The recurring characters are further rounded in this book, and I especially like the characters of Lucius Grenville and the mysterious James Denis. The pacing of the story show more is done exceedingly well so that there are no parts that are slow or difficult to get through. I was absorbed throughout, and look forward to the next book in the series. show less

This is the second story in the Captain Lacey series and it was another great book. I really enjoyed these stories and will continue to pursue the series.
Captain Lacey encounters a woman that is out of place in a seedy neighborhood and follows her only to end up saving her from an unfortunate circumstance. He gets into another mystery. The cast of characters from book 1 is present and accounted for again. There are numerous threads that continue throughout the series that make it interesting as well.

The 2nd in the series of an injured veteran of the Napoleonic Wars who finds new purpose in his life seeking justice for innocent victims. In this installment, Captain Lacey is on his way home one dark night when he comes across a lady on an incomplete bridge. Thinking she is to throw herself over, he follows her and when she is attacked by a man, he rescues her and since she is unwilling to tell him where she lives or what her name is, he takes her to his house, and thus embroils himself in a new mystery for the lady believes her husband to have been murdered, and the murderers to be 3 gentlemen who had been part of a scandalous rioting during the Peninsular War.
Once again, Captain Lacey pits himself against formidable opponents and show more puts himself in danger, both emotionally and physically. Once again, his gentleman sidekick, Lord Grenville, offers assistance with introductions and advice. Once again, the mysterious lord of the underworld James Denis finds ways to put Captain Lacey further in his debt.
As more bodies start falling, will Captain Lacey be able to uncover the truth behind the scandal that occurred during the war and unmask the killers for both past and present murders before all clues are forever sealed in the tombs with their victims? show less

The Publisher Says: Captain Lacey returns in the second book of this series. After saving a beautiful woman from a mysterious assailant near the docks, Captain Lacey helps in her search for her husband's murderers. Her late husband was accused of committing a crime during the atrocities after a Peninsular War battle, and Lydia Westin wants Lacey to clear his name. Lacey investigates with his usual thoroughness, bringing in Lucius Grenville, the immensely wealthy Regency dandy, to help him. But murder and mayhem follow, and James Denis once more tries to recruit Lacey to help him with his underworld activities. This book introduces the characters of Lady Breckenridge and Grenville's irrepressible footmen, Matthias and show more Bartholomew.
My Review: How unpleasant it was to find that the criminals were portrayed as evil, and that evil took the form of...gasp!...sodomy! Perish forbid!
Well, that might just be it for me and the author. I have not yet decided whether or not to bail on the series. I'm angry about this, and I won't soon forgive the shoddiness of the trick. show less

This is the second book in a series.
Captain Lacey, an officer on half pay in Regency England, again gets involved in the investigation of the murder of a Colonel who is accused of being involved in the murder of a fellow officer after he saves the life of a woman who tries to commit suicide alone, out of the streets of London.
Helped by a wealthy friend, who enjoys participating in something that gives his rather meaningless life reason, Lacey wiggles out the secrets of a very convoluted group of aristocrats.
