One cold, beautiful night Elias has pitched his tent close to a range of hills. He has chosen the place with great care, so that his family will be protected from the wind and frost and wild animals. A group of shepherds awaken the family in the middle of the night. They tell of the angels who suddenly appeared to herald the birth of a baby named Jesus, in a humble manger in the town of Bethlehem. "We are going to welcome him," says one of the shepherds. "Will you come?" Elias decides to go, but he tells his daughter, Miriam, that she must stay behind. "You are too young," he says. Miriam longs to go and give Jesus her favorite doll. But to do so she must ask the wind to stop, so that it won't blow her away. She must ask the frost to go away, so that it won't freeze her fingers and toes. And she must ask the Great Bear the command the wild beasts not to harm her. In this poignant story, Miriam's faith allows her to overcome all these obstacles and give the baby Jesus her own special gift.… (more)
