Description

Cecilia Lapthorne always vowed she'd never go back to Dune Cottage. So, no one is more surprised than Cecilia to find herself escaping her own seventieth birthday party to return to the remote but beautiful cottage on Cape Cod-a place filled with memories. Some are good-especially memories of the early days with her husband, volatile artist Cameron, before his fame eclipsed their marriage. But then there are the memories she has revealed to no one. Especially not her daughter, Kristen, who show more hero-worshipped her father. For aspiring artist Lily, Dune Cottage has been a refuge, albeit an illicit one. After dropping out of medical school, she's cleaning houses on the Cape to get by, guilt-ridden for disappointing her parents. Unoccupied for years, the cottage seemed the perfect place to hide away and lick her wounds-until Cecilia unexpectedly arrives. Despite an awkward beginning, Lily accepts Cecilia's invitation to stay on as her guest, and a flicker of kinship ignites. Then Cecilia's grandson, Todd-and Lily's unrequited crush-shows up, sending a shock wave through their unlikely friendship. Will it inspire Lily to find the courage to live the life she wants? Can Cecilia finally let go of the past to find a new future? Because as surely as the tide erases past footprints, this summer is offering both Cecilia and Lily the chance to swap old dreams for new... show less

As someone who has visited Cape Cod on more than a few occasions, I was drawn to Sarah Morgan's The Summer Swap initially because of its setting. Morgan paints a vivid picture of the cottage that Cecelia, Lily, and eventually Todd end up spending the entire summer. I could see the cottage in my mind's eye and would love to have spent time there myself, and if you are someone who loves interior decorating, you'll enjoy this part of the story even more.

The characters are also vividly portrayed and you can see why Cecelia and Lily were drawn to each other. They are both trying to discover what the rest of their lives should be, what would make them happy and fulfilled. It was also enjoyable watching the relationships between Todd and Lily show more and Cecelia and her old friend blossom.

There is a bit of a mystery here, but one that careful readers will probably guess at early on; that doesn't make it any less interesting however.

The Summer Swap is a perfect novel with which to start the summer beach reading season. Pop it in your beach bag next to the sunscreen.

Cecilia’s husband has passed away. She discovers he did not sell their Cape Cod home like he told her that he did! She has terrible memories of this home and she wants it gone. She leaves her birthday party…that she never wanted…and takes off to the cape. She soon discovers that she has and unexpected house guest, Lily.

Lily is such a sweet woman. She has given up medical school because it was just not for her. She moves to the cape and is cleaning houses and pursuing her art. She has been living in this abandoned cottage that she is being paid to keep up. No one is living there, so who will know! When Cecilia shows up and damages all of her husband’s paintings except one, Lily knows she must come clean.

This is one of my favorite show more times of the year…When all the new beach reads are released. Sarah Morgan is one of my favorite Christmas authors and yes, she writes books for the summer too!

This is such a good tale. It’s about family secrets, family drama and strength to overcome! Add in the wonderful characters and the location and you have an all around good tale!

Slow, Character Driven Coastal Tale Featuring Flawed Yet Understandable Characters. Yes, to an extent if you've read one Sarah Morgan non-Christmas tale, you've read every Sarah Morgan non-Christmas tale. (And her Christmas tales are simply a variant on the non-Christmas ones, featuring some extra Christmas emphasis of some form.) This noted, what Sarah Morgan does, she does solidly and has clearly built a fan base for a reason, and this is yet another example of why her formula works so well.

Here, yet again, we get three generations of female leads, with the guys mostly playing romantic foils of some form or another, and each of our female leads has her own dramas and insecurities and, yes, mistakes. Of course, in typical Sarah Morgan show more fashion... well, let's not give away her endings in this review, shall we? Let's instead say that the Hallmarkie type crowd will generally enjoy these books, even though the Sarah Morgan formula is at least *slightly* different than that one.

Overall a solid tale solidly written, and a perfectly fine, inoffensive, casual "summer" / "beach" read (that, to be clear, can truly be enjoyed any time). Very much recommended.

I'm again really enjoying this authors writing. Her holiday book was the first i had read and just like this one was an easy comforting read. A lot of thought and description went into the plot and makes you want to create new spaces and paint!
Sometimes, I need a feel-good story that goes where you expect it does and ends where you expect it to. All the boxes get checked. All the loose ends get tied up. All the stories work out. This book fits that bill. The Summer Swap set in a beautiful Cape Code setting is a lovely summer escape and a perfect casual beach read.
