I love educational poetry books. I think it's awesome when authors can incorporate education while still being able to provide entertainment. The poems in this book are so cute. Most of the poems are very consistent with the rhyming scheme that they are using. The majority of the poems have an ABAB scheme or an AABB scheme. This book is perfect for an elementary of middle school classroom because the poems talk about everything that they will learn about in class. In this book the author has poems about fossils, cells, genes, solutions, the water cycle and so much more. The illustrations also resembles Shel Silverstein's drawings.
I will definitely be referring back to this poetry book while teaching different topics in science. It has poems from when the world was just one big continent to What we are. A great way to get students laughing and interesting in Science. Also, at the top of each page they have mnemonics and ideas for each poem when teaching.
This collection of poems was all about science. The author of the poems covered almost all the topics of science. There were illustrations in this book however, they were very bland. The book itself is very small so if I were to read this to my class I would have to project it onto the Promethean Board from the ELMO. I would probably read a poem that went with whichever lesson we would be covering in science that day.
