Erin McCabe Mysteries #4
Tough to read but great addition to the series
What I liked:
* Erin: attorney, transgender woman, intelligent, professional, good friend, true to self, takes on tough cases, in law partnership with longtime friend Swish, has more than the case to contend with in this book
* Mark: Erin’s fiancé then husband, schoolteacher, estranged from most of his family due to his relationship with Erin, loving, supportive, a good partner to Erin
* Being in on the beginning of the life Erin and Mark will be setting up as newlyweds and parents
* Duane Swisher: Erin’s law partner, ex-FBI, basketball skills, intelligent, family man, supportive, professional, protective, a good man
* Jon Mazer: show more State Trooper, accused of murder, strong, caring, estranged from his family, has the deck stacked against him, kept hoping all would work out for him in a positive manner
* Carol Roy: Deputy Attorney General, bright, capable, someone with a bright future, not thrilled with the person she is working with
* The family aspects of the story and how people in families react to LGBTQIA issues – both positively and negatively
* The plot, pacing, setting, writing and the way all the threads were tied up in the
* That I could thoroughly dislike the bad guys
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how evil some of the characters in this book, what they did, and the impact they had on others
* What happened to more than one innocent person in this story

I really enjoyed this story of transgender attorney Erin McCabe. She is defending a state trooper, Jon Mazer, who is accused of killing an investigative reporter. Their gun was used in the murder, so that implicates the trooper. Mazer admits that he was the source for the reporter's exposé on a group of police called The Lords of Discipline. Erin and her partner, Duane Swisher (Swish) need to find a way to prove Mazer's innocence. This was a later book in the series, and there are references to previous happenings, but I think it is OK to read as a standalone.
