Description

Presents a history of Southern Appalachian coal towns from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Drawing on oral histories, company records, and census data, the author reveals that miners and their families attributed benefits to the mining companies that are not commonly understood. Also suggests that miners felt more control over their destiny and their communities than previously thought.

Well documented study of real company towns and the views of the people who lived in them. Hint, they weren't as bad as rumored by so-called experts.
