Ausgerechnet die stumme Teresa, eine wohnungslose Bettlerin, findet das Findelkind auf den Stufen einer Kirche im venezolanischen Maracaiba. Sie nimmt den Jungen zu sich und nennt in Antonio. Er wächst in den Slums der Stadt heran und lernt zu überleben. Als man in der Gegend auf Öl stößt verändert das alles. Antonio erhält als 12-jähriger einen Job in einem Bordell, wo er überraschend seinen leiblichen Vater trifft. Der verwitwete Kapitän sorgt dafür, dass der Junge eine Ausbildung erhält. Antonio kommt in die Familie des Rechtsanwalts Victor Emiro. Er ist fleißig und lernbegierig.
