The Big Dipper

The Big Dipper thoroughly provides an explanation of the topic of stars and astrology in a simple manner for children to understand. This book was a great book and I liked it for three reasons. First, the writing was very descriptive. The descriptions of the stars were very simplistic for young children and allow them to imagine and picture each star in the sky. For example, “When you look at the Big Dipper in the sky, imagine a dotted line going through one star at the end of the bowl to the other one. Imagine that the dotted line goes all the way to the North Star”. This description allows the child or children reading this book to get a clear idea of what the Big Dipper looks like in the sky. Next, the illustrations were great show more and played a key role in the book. Without the illustrations it would have been hard to understand what each star looked like in the sky. The drawings in the book gave a clear depiction of star formations and constellations. Lastly, the book pushes readers to think while they are reading. This is because questions are presented throughout the book. For example, “In winter I see these Stars. But why do I see some stars in both summer and winter?” These questions are great to raise to young readers reading the book, as it will confirm that they understand the text they are reading. Readers can respond to this question by using the text in the book by saying, “I can see the Big Dipper almost every night, if the sky is clear”. Overall, there is no main idea, but this is a great book to present to young readers that need or want to learn about stars and astrology. show less

This would be a great book for a classroom learning about the stars and astrology. It talks about all different kinds of star formations and constellations. It is kind of a longer book so I would not recommend it for younger children. I like the pictures in this book because they are friendly and inviting.
