Description
Twelve-year-old Leslie Adams is found covered in blood, standing over the lifeless body of a boy named Tommy. Everyone said she did it--after all, she was the only one there when he died. The most terrifying part? Leslie doesn't remember a thing. Years later, she still can't escape the shadow of that day. Now in college, Leslie is desperate for a fresh start... until the blackouts return. Night after night, she wakes from these fugue states with fresh bruises and unexplained cuts on her show more skin. Doctors insist she's self-harming--coping with repressed trauma. But deep down, Leslie knows something far more sinister is at play. Disturbing visions begin to haunt her: echoes of childish laughter in empty rooms, the silhouette of a familiar little boy lingering just out of sight. Leslie fears the horror that claimed Tommy never really left. With each missing moment, the darkness inside her grows--stronger, bolder. And when the truth finally claws its way to the surface, Leslie must confront a reality more terrifying than any childhood nightmare. Because the real horror isn't what she might have done back then... it's what's been hiding inside her ever since. See what others are saying: ***** "In "Little Brother," Cosco has crafted a masterwork of biological horror that reads as early Cronenberg filtered through a contemporary lens. It's a nerve-shredding, at times terrifying debut that forces us to confront the ultimate betrayal - when the enemy isn't just within, but is quite literally part of our own flesh and blood." show lessTags

This was a quick read that was entertaining if you suspend disbelief. It is well-written, descriptive, and surprising in many sections. My problem with the short novel is that I really didn't care for the main character, Leslie. There was something about her that I found unmemorable verging on annoying. I really didn't care what happened to her. Maybe this is because there was not much written about her to create her character prior to the main incident at the beginning of the novel or it could be the result of her just not being particularly interesting in general. I also found her visions confusing when the final outcome of the story is revealed. Why would she have had these visions - it didn't make sense to me. I would be interested show more in reading more work from this writer as I did appreciate the writer's overall writing style. show less

Sometimes when I win ARC's, I forget what they're about because I'm backlogged on my to read list. This was the case for Little Brother. After reading the first two chapters, knowing the title, and seeing the cover in LibraryThing, I could easily surmise the plot twist. So kudos to the cover artist for matching the theme but I do wish it could have been a surprise.
This novella was interesting. It lightly touched on topics of mental health, relationships, and medical trauma while having a hint of supernatural. Given the author's writing style, I don't think I could tolerate this as a full length novel though. I found the author easily focused on these specific show more topics but struggled to define key interactions between some characters, like Darren, in a meaningful way. Sometimes the plot and timelines were too rushed to understand what exactly was happening or why. I'd say Little Brother really came into its full potential at the end when the author breathed into the climax.
As a horror and Sci fi reader, I did enjoy this novella. If it had a bit more editing and fleshing out, I think I'd enjoy it more. Worth reading for a quick afternoon break! show less

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I really enjoyed this book. This is exactly the kind of "What the heck is going on?!" type of suspense I look for in a book. The idea behind this story is new and a nice change from the usual thriller type novels (which I still love dearly, don't get me wrong.) The only reason I didn't rate this book higher is because there were some inconsistencies that need to be changed. For example, at one point it talks about a character "tightening his grip on the pistol", a pistol which he hasn't even picked up yet, and doesn't for a few more paragraphs. If you can look past little things like this, the book makes for a great read, and the story really pulls you in.
