Description
1886. A historical picture of the early church in pagan Rome, illustrating the glories of the Christian martyrs as exemplified in the lives of the fair young Virgin, St. Agnes; the heroic soldier, St. Sebastian; the devoted youth, St. Pancratius; etc. This volume is not historical, rather it consists of a series of pictures than of a narrative of events. Richly illustrated with over 66 illustrations, some of which are from original drawings by Joseph Blanc.Tags

162. Fabiola or The Church of the Catacombs, by Cardinal Wiseman (read 24 Sep 1944) On Sep 16, 1944, I said: "Am reading Fabiola, by Cardinal Wiseman. It is very good." But the 1944 presidential campaign was going on and nearly all my diary entries were taken up by that and I never mentioned the book again! On page 1215 of The Guide to Catholic Literature 1888-1940 the following appears: "The theme of this novel is the heroism of the early Christians under the Roman persecutions, and the central figure is a proud young lady of pagan birth and connections who ultimately renounces paganism for Christianity."
