Classic Maigret: after thirty-five years, an old classmate from the Lycée turns up in Maigret's office. He's the chief suspect in a murder case, but Maigret can't bring himself to believe that the former class clown could kill someone.
I love the opening of this one: Maigret sitting in his office at the end of the afternoon and fascinated by a fly that keeps landing in the same spot on the report he's supposed to be reading. You can just imagine Simenon puffing away at his pipe and typing at random, wondering who's going to come into the room to interrupt the reverie...

Georges Simenon (1903-1989) is the author of a great series featuring Paris Police Inspector, Maigret. The Inspector is a pipe smoking (as Simenon was), brandy beer and wine drinking, married man who solves crimes of passion in 20th Century France with a mostly dispassionate and dogged search for the facts.

In this novel, Maigret is an irascible, somewhat cynical, and demanding boss of a team of police who take on the case of Josephine, a woman "kept" by four men of means. Maigret's boyhood friend Florentin is a ne'er-do-well leaching off of Josephine while the four men give her money. He seems to be the most likely suspect in the murder of the nice, comfortable female companion.

Maigret shows a softer side of his personality in his show more dealing with Florentin during the investigation. But, something has to give in the case, and one of the five men is certainly the murderer. All the evidence seems to point to Florentine: motive, opportunity, and money.

The novel is translated from the French in a very readable style by Eileen Ellenbogen.

It is shocking how high quality all of these books are considering how much he wrote. Yikes.

Read this on the plane on the way to and from Oktoberfest.

The prolific Belgian-born writer Georges Simenon produced hundreds of fictional works under his own name and 17 pseudonyms, in addition to more than 70 books about Inspector Maigret, long "the favorite sleuth of highbrow detective-story readers" (SR). More than 50 "Simenons" have been made into films. In addition to his mystery stories, he wrote show more what he called "hard" books, the serious psychological novels numbering well over 100. The autobiographical Pedigree, set in his native town of Liege, is perhaps his finest work. The publication of Simenon's intimate memoirs also attracted considerable attention. Simenon himself once said that he would never write a "great novel." Yet Gide called him "a great novelist, perhaps the greatest and truest novelist we have in French literature today," and Thornton Wilder (see Vol. 1) found that Simenon's narrative gift extends "to the tips of his fingers." The following are some of Simenon's novels, exclusive of the Maigret detective stories, that are in print. (Bowker Author Biography) Georges Simenon was born on February 13, 1903 in Liege, Belgium. He wrote more than 200 fiction works under 16 different pseudonyms. His first book, The Case of Peter the Lent led to 80 more of the like including the main character, Inspector Maigret. He published over 400 books that were translated into 50 different languages and sold by the millions. He also wrote psychological novels, including The Man Who Watched the Train Go By. He died on September 4, 1989 in Lausanne. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
