Kites Sail High A Book About Verbs By: Ruth Heller

Summary
In this picture book there are illustrations to correspond to verbs being described. This book informs readers on all of the types of verbs and their various forms. The book also includes correct ways to use verbs. It also tells how verbs should not be used. It also demonstrates how verbs change tenses. This book while informative is appropriate for children in primary grades who are beginning to use grammar for writing sentences. This will help students use verbs correctly.

Reaction
This book uses rhyme at the end of each line to the following line or page. This book would be great for teaching children correct grammar and usage of verbs. This book would also be useful to show more introduce children to verbs. This book’s pictures use a variety of colors that are very realistic. The artwork in this book will appeal to children because it depicts objects they have seen. I enjoyed this book for it is simple to understand yet teaches a valuable language arts lesson.

Extension Ideas
1. I would have children choose a verb and make a poem using that verb
2. I would have children draw a verb picture such as using read and depicting themselves reading.
3. I would have children act out verbs in a game of charades like hop, skip, jump.
4. I would ask children words and ask if they are verbs.
5. If children know other parts of speech ask children to tell you if a word is a noun, adverb, verb, pronoun, preposition, or adjective. Make it a game and call it what part of speech am I? This can be done in teams or individuals depending on class size.
A playful exploration of verbs, including their moods, tenses, and irregular forms.
This book would be great for grades three and four. I didn't really like this book because I thought it was kind of unorganized, so if I used this, I would modify it. I would use this in the classroom as a read- aloud about verb identification.
genre: informational. This book is informational because it tells you about verbs and how to use them. It also tells you the types of verb. I believe it was not the best way to show the verbs but it was a descent depiction of a informational book
The protagonist in this book is a verb. You learn everything about a verb. You learn different uses and that it can be an action word. You also hear that there are different types of verbs in this book. The verb is the main idea in this book and it is a great depiction of character analysis.
A nicely illustrated informational text explaining different tyupes and examples of verbs.
This book can be used to help enhance students use of verbs in their writing.
