Love in Exile

Description

Shon Faye shows love is much greater than the narrow ideals we have been taught to crave so desperately that we are willing to bend and break ourselves to fit them. Wise, funny, unsparing, suffused with a radical clarity, this is a book of and for our times- for seeing and knowing love, in whatever form it takes, is the meaning of life itself.

Love in Exile is at its strongest when Shon Faye turns inward. Her reflections on romantic, platonic, and spiritual love are thoughtful throughout, but what stayed with me most was her honesty about how being a trans woman shaped her relationships with others and with herself. The final sections, particularly around self-acceptance and rebuilding a relationship with herself, were genuinely moving.

The opening chapters especially are excellent—sharp, vulnerable, and beautifully written. I do think the book loses a little momentum as it goes on, and at times I wanted the analysis to go deeper, but even so, there’s something compelling about Faye’s voice and willingness to interrogate herself so openly. Thoughtful, intimate, and worth show more reading. show less
