Touching account of the origin of poppies to remember those lost in war.
½
This is a short, simple explanation of why we wear poppies for Remembrance Day, suitable for younger children, accompanied by paintings by Governor General's Award winning artist Ron Lightburn. It also includes the poem “In Flanders Fields” and more in-depth information in two sections at the end of the book: The Story of the Poppy, and Remembrance Day in Canada, geared toward helping teachers and parents introduce children to Canada's history of war and peacekeeping. The book was nominated for Saskatchewan's Shining Willow Award in 2005, and for the Hackmatack Children's Choice Book Award in 2006.
"With soothing words and illustrations aimed specifically at younger readers, children will learn how the bright red poppy became the symbol for honouring those who fought for freedom.
The text is simple and is combined with stunning paintings by award winning illustrator Ron Lightburn. The familiar poem, "In Flanders Fields," is included, along with information about the symbolism and history of the poppy and Remembrance Day - all geared towards helping parents and teachers explain the significance of past and present wars and Canada's peacekeeping missions." -- Google Books
