Was okay; 4-stars for good writing and readability, but the story was just so-so. Ford getting all dramatic in his old age, and seemed to be making some weird life changes. I don't read these in order so maybe it would make more sense if I did. But I like the characters, and like I said the writing is good and makes for a fast read. However, this was another time when Randy Wayne White made Doc miss the obvious when he is always 10 steps ahead of any of the clues. In this case, he's got the obvious candiru which should have been the first thing to come to mind if he'd ever been to, or read about, tropical South America (which supposedly has been his backyard). Myth or reality, it still should have fallen directly in line, show more thought-process-wise, with the rest of the story. Also, there were a hell of a lot of loose ends at the end of the story. That was kind of weird too. show less
Randy Wayne White never fails to provide a good solid mystery and this one is no exception. The subject is not for the squeamish and I am oh so grateful that I had gotten back from a vacation to Florida before I picked up this book. I listened to an audio version and I am sorry to say that it was abridged. I am sure that explains why several plot threads were left untied. However, all in all, I enjoyed the story and the narration by Dick Hill.
Did not seem like a typical Doc Ford book and too many snakes and worms!
I love Randy Wayne White BUT this was not my favorite of his books.
