Spoiler alert: It's a dystopian Pacific Northwest. There's a killer virus on the loose. Climate change has led to regular destructive storms. An authoritarian government keeps certain populations safe under idyllic domed environments while secretly infecting others. Beyond the protective domes live mercenary societies including the Stay Alive, of which Fox is a part. When her beloved sister Rabbit is taken captive, Fox determines to rescue her, even if it means training with the military to become a Storm Runner. The story progresses slowly with lots of world building; the plot was almost too sluggish for me. The ending ensures a sequel.
This is a young adult fantasy novel with several well worn plot lines. The sister of the main character is kidnapped away because she seems to have genetic resistance that leaders think they might make a vaccine to fight a Covid like scourge infecting the people. Fox (the main character) goes on a quest to rescue her having to undergo a series of challenges (ala Hunger Games) to get her. The crazy part is that fox has a hip impairment and is allowed to keep her cane while doing them. Marketed as a new generations Hunger Games which it is not,
