The life cycle of the pumpkin, and its use in various autumn cultural celebrations, including Halloween and Thanksgiving, is explored in this non-fiction picture book from prolific children's author and illustrator Gail Gibbons. The diverse range of pumpkins, from the baby bear to the big max, is covered, as is the cultivation of pumpkins and the process whereby they grow from seeds to gourds. Their use in seasonal celebrations is explored, and the book closes with a guide on how to carev a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern...
A good general introduction to the subject of pumpkins for younger children, The Pumpkin Book pairs a simple but engaging text with appealing illustrations that look to have been done in watercolor. Gibbons has show more produced many works of picture book non-fiction, but this is only the fourth I have read. Like the others, including the related Halloween Is..., I found it enjoyable, and think that it offers an interesting blend of ecological and historical information for younger elementary school students, which is the audience for which I would recommend it. show less

This was another recommendation from Read Aloud Revival (Sarah Mackenzie). I think I appreciated this book just a bit more than my kids did because it teaches so much about how pumpkins grow. They weren’t as enamored with the illustrations, but they asked a ton of questions, even asking if we could plant some pumpkins! The wording is a little more advanced, but still easy enough for my 5yo to understand. This was a fun, informative book that made us miss pumpkin patches (thanks, 2020
My second graders loved this book. Before Halloween I read it to them. This book offers so many things to students, and can be very useful for parents and teachers. It tells a little history on the pumpkin, how it grows, when to harvest it, fun facts about it, and ways to decorate it. The illustrations are colorful and charming. I found this to be a very fun, useful book. 1-3
Rounded, cartoonish illustrations reminiscent of Tomie de Paola take up the top 3/4 of each page, with text along the bottom (and some labels on the pictures). Readers learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin, from seed to harvest time. There are instructions on how to carve a pumpkin, how to prepare pumpkin seeds to save or eat, and a brief history of Halloween. Perfect for pre-K and K-2.
Want to know more about Pumpkins? Well this is the right book. This book would be good to use when learning about pumpkins, or around Halloween. In this book it tells us what family pumpkins belong to, when to plant pumpkin seeds, what the seed needs to grow, what the plant will look like at each stage, and when to harvest the pumpkins. It even tells you step by step on how to carve a pumpkin. This was a fun informational book.
This book is great for the fall for all children of different ages. It promotes life skills, learning how to plant pumpkins and the life cycle. It also mentions culture of different race and their background of the pumpkin.
Perfect for a lesson plan in October, this book will have your students pumped about pumpkings. Gibbons explains the growth cycle, different kinds of pumpkins, the role of pumpkins in the first Thanksgiving, how to dry seeds, and how to carve pumpkins. This book leads to a lot of great activities in science, math, reading, music, and art. A wonderful lesson plan: http://www.lessonplanspage.com/LAScienceSSThePumpkinBook-LearnAboutPumpkins23.ht...
