This book was told by a young boy character who was describing the things his family was doing to prepare for the Sabbath. He explained what the Sabbath was, why it’s important, and the roles everyone in his family plays to prepare for it and what they do the day of the Sabbath. Lots of the family primarily makes lots, and lots, of food.
Great for learning more about a culture, religion, or holiday.

Colorful illustrations help show an egalitarian, observant family preparing for observing Shabbat. The daughter talks about reading Torah when she has her Bat Mitzvah ceremony and a woman is standing with a tallit during the Torah service on Saturday morning in front of a mixed-seating congregation. The grandmother tells a story about making noodles and using the backs of chairs to dry them when she was a child in Rumania.
Starlight and Candles is a story of Jake and Rosy helping their parents get ready for Sabbath. The reminders of things to do start Thursday night and all through Friday they must prepare for that evening dinner. They do things such as make Challah, get out the candles and candle sticks. The mother tells the children that they have Sabbath on that day because that was the day God rested and now they all celebrate it.
I would almost call this an information book as it teaches alot about sabbath.
