Though not quite as good as "The Heavenly Horse," this sequel is still wonderful. Piper is the son of Dancer, The Heavenly Horse, and Duchess. His father and mother overcame the Dark Horse to conceive him. But, he is still in danger and his adventure is just beginning.

This duology is just the thing for horse fans who are tired of the same old story. Many authors have used anthropomorphism, yet this is the most well-developed horse story to do so. Piper and the others go beyond human characteristics to a fully fleshed out mythology complete with their own gods, demons and mythical realms. Luckily, Stanton never lets the reader forget these are horses - so the magic stays true throughout. Highly recommended!

Piper at the Gate reads a touch better than its previous installation, though I would hazard to say the characters are not as interesting/do not grow as much. Most characters are quite basic, particularly our main character Piper, though he does change somewhat within the last two chapters-- it's rather abrupt.

I would recommend this book to those who like fast-paced and lore-heavy stories, but don't mind rather matte main characters (also, read the first one before this!).
