One of the most beloved comic actors of the 19th century, Joseph Jefferson was best known for his playing of Rip Van Winkle. Nearly forgotten now, Jefferson helped to shape American theatre, and did much to elevate acting from a rather dubious occupation to a respectable and respected profession. His autobiography is written with modesty, gentle humor, and a pleasant and engaging tone that allow the reader to understand just why he was so popular in his era. Not only a valuable document in American theatre history, but an enjoyable book to read for its own sake.
