Author Paul Hutchens was born on April 7, 1902 in Thorntown, Indiana. He grew up in Sugar Creek Township near Thorntown, Indiana. As a child, he attended a one room country school. He graduated from Moody Bible Institute, became an evangelist, and was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1925. While recovering from tuberculosis, he began writing and show more published the first Sugar Creek Gang book in 1939. He was best known as the author of this series with a total of 36 Christian-themed fictional books about the adventures of this group of children called"The Sugar Creek Gang". These books were popular in evangelical Christian homes and remain in print, along with CD and audio versions. He also wrote 21 books for adults.
