This is the second part of the original 'Chalet School and the Lintons', which was tenth in the lengthy series about a school in Austria, written in the middle of the 20th century.
This book is primarily about Joyce Linton, struggling to gain popularity in the Chalet School, and resorting to mischief with fairly dire results. She's rebellious, but the author clearly shows her to have a sense of integrity and honesty, contrasting strongly with that of another, older girl, who thinks nothing of resorting to lies and revenge.
There's a rather dull section in the middle of this book, describing in some detail the annual Chalet School fair in aid of charity. But on the whole it's pleasant light reading for anyone who enjoys teenage fiction show more from time to time; best to be read after the first part of the book, published in Armada as 'Chalet School and the Lintons'.

On the more racist end of the Chalet school scale. At least there was a lot going on apart from that too?
I thought the teachers were being a bit OTT when they told Thekla she was a "murderess" but then Joyce's mother almost did die after all! How dramatic!
