This book was just so full of WTF and what the hell is going on moments. It was too damn confusing yet so freaking amazing in every possible way so totally worth it. It had moments where I just wanted to throw it against the wall, moments where I just wanted to hug it really close and couldn't stop smiling and moments where I was just like "what the actual hell is going on here?"
Of course, just like any Cassandra Clare book, it didn't lack of that hilarious atmosphere and this time was not just Simon but all of them had their moments here more than in any other book in the series.
The character development was on a whole new level here as well. They all finally accepted themselves, who they truly are and what they really want and just show more acted that way. Although something that frustrated me was that most of their arguments together would have been easily solved if they just sat down and talked about it! Now would that would have been so hard?!
The ending though! It was so heartbreaking cause of course of a certain that happened *cough* Malec *cough* and I was in tears denying what happened but I finally accepted it and decided to just hope it will get better in the next/final *sobs* book. When looking back to how I thought that the ending of CoFA was a major cliffhanger of course I didn't see this one coming! This is the worst in the TMI so far.
I really loved all the references from The Infernal Devices and the book Jace read to Clary from was actually Tessa's and I just couldn't. Also, Brother Zachariah and all his references of the two people he would have died for and all that and how he said he would do anything just to save the last of the Herondale line. And how Magnus talked about the Parabatai bond with Alec referring to Will and Jem of course. MY HEART!!! I literally wanted to scream about all that.
Also how we get to see a bit of the Blackthorne family with Helen and Jules and it made me so excited for The Dark Artifices.

Clary Fairchild: She was all shadowhunter-y in this book and it was really exciting to see that. I also really liked the way she thought about a lot o stuff but of course she wouldn't be Clary if there is not some irrationality. The deal she made with the Seelie queen was a bit stupid though. She should have known better by now that it will turn back and bite her cause Seelies can't be trusted! So of course she was working with Sebastian after all. I still think that the way the rings work is quite interesting and how she planned to use them was brilliant. But when the ring went missing I immediately knew sebastian took it, I don't know why she didn't think of that. Why wouldn't anyone think that the evil living in the apartment with them didn't steal the ring cause a ring that molds to your finger doesn't just fall of. How she would have given anything for Jace to be kissing someone else if that means he is there. When Jules asked her if she has a brother and she replies no, I was like but Sebastian is your brother, you can't deny that! How Aline was very supportive of them and spoke fondly of Jace that none of them could say anything but Clary managing to thank her. I felt bad for when she thought that her mother should have killed Sebastian when he was a baby, it's not like it was her fault. Something that really intrigued me and I wanna know, could the female warlock that performed the ceremony on her be Tessa and the silent brother be Jem? I also think that her ability to draw portals is one of the best things ever! The way she said she'll go on with the plan even though Simon kept telling her no just proves how how irrational she still is a bit. I laughed so much at how mad she was for breaking her nail while hitting Sebastian and how she just used a rune and destroyed the whole house. The whole fight scene in the end was just epic! In the end though when she stabbed Jace with Michael's sword, I was literally freaking out when he did not move. Then we have the whole epilogue scene between them and oh my god that was just so freaking adorable!!! It proved even more how perfect they are for each other and how they understand each other better than anyone else can. Also how her relationship with Isabelle been and it was amazing seeing them this close and talking about guy trouble for a change instead of just demons.

Jace Lightwood: So he was basically not himself the whole book and I feel really bad for liking this him even more. Here he is just more relaxed and cheerful and I know it's only because of Sebastian's control but still. I got pretty frustrated when The Consul decided to stop the search for him, he is one of their best Shadowhunters out there and they just decided to leave him?! But then we have Aline talking about him and everything he did for them and it showed that they actually or at least someone cares about him and appreciates him who is not from his family. The scene where he appeared with Sebastian at Clary's house, holy crap that was confusing! After Clary went with them and he freaking asked her on a date despite everything that was happening and the date actually went well! The fact that he mentioned his fear of ducks was just great!!! I liked how when The Silent Brother said that Herondales are survivors proving that Jace is really related to Will. Of course there was so many cute scenes between him and Clary that were just adorable and made me feel sad that he wasn't the real him. His death wish though has gone too far this time! I really did not blame Clary for telling Sebastian about it cause even if he is not himself, he is bette this way than dead. When he died or got stabbed to be more accurate, my heart was beating so fast till he started breathing again! And now he is glowing and we have no freaking idea why.

Simon Lewis: THIS GUY!!! Talking about how fucking awesome he is will never do him justice! He goes through so many things that any normal person would have just gave up on his whole life because of them yet, he comes back again and saves the day and he is just so amazing. He is such a fun character that the books would actually be dull without him. Like that scene where he said their Motto wrong and Alec corrected him realizing that Jace clearly messed with him that was so funny. Also how he kept saying No so many times to Clary's plan that was hilarious then agreeing to it any way cause he is just the supportive great friend he always is. How bold was he saying "Shocker" when the Seelie Queen wanted something in return, even Alec couldn't suppress his laugh! And when he suggested that Jace has Stockholm Syndrome and would go after him to tell him he loves him just to save Clary from going, how hilarious was that! Oh and how he left the whole plot of Team Good's plan and asked Clary if Azazel was from Smurfs. But he also had his heartbreaking moments, like when he feels bad for actually being a Vampire and it makes me feel so bad for him. And his awesome moments like when he did that quick Math to figure out that Clary is in Italy just by knowing the time there! An how great when they summoned the demon and wanted to get rid of him but it wouldn't budge till he went in the pentagram and the demon wished them luck and disappeared. I LOVED when he finally talked to his sister and how she accepted the whole thing and said she'd always be there for him, that was just perfect! Now to the irrational part of him which I'm guessing grew because of hanging a lot with Clary, summoning Raziel! I loved that scene I cannot deny that but I had my fingers crossed the whole time that he wouldn't die. He handled the situation beautifully but still! I like how he notices how people feel and noticed there was something wrong with Malec from Alec's expressions. His words to them before casting the spell and how he desperately wanted to reach Clary to talk to her one last time in case something happened to him!!! Let's just say that without Simon, a lot of things would have gone wrong here.

Alec Lightwood: A second just to appreciate him all dressed up for the clave meeting cause that was a great image to picture. I loved how he knows how much Clary means to Jace and that he finally started to act like a human being around her. I also loved that scene where Aline thanked him for coming out, it felt like he opened a whole new world to them. The whole Seelie queen was horrific when she turned him into the old man and I blame her for everything that happened between him and Magnus. Still, MALEC MALEC MALEC, should I say it again?! I love how he already has a key for Magnus' place and he feels home there. What i don't like about Alec is how he holds his feelings in situations that desperately needs them, like when Magnus asked if he'd do what Clary is doing to Jace and he just changed the subject. WHY?! I hate it when they fight and they did this quite a lot in this book and I just felt really bad for it. A moment to appreciate his and Isabelle's relationship. All their encounters in this were just heart breaking perfect! I hated how Camille could easily get on his nerves just by talking about the past and it actually scared me that he was a bit interested in the spell. Also a moment to appreciate how he jumped when when a mouse squeaked. The car ride scene and I felt really bad for him cause of how people are talking about them and then Simon just jumping in telling him the whole gay spider thing and he actually got it and I was so proud of this. The battle scene, he was so badass in that scene like never before and Magnus was all proud saying that's my boyfriend and MY HEART! Also how Alec seemed like he was about to die when Magnus got hurt just really broke me. Another moment to appreciate how he joked about not knowing who Magnus was after the demon took one of their memories and everyone including me, hearts' stopped for a second there. The last scene! I don't even know how to talk about this. I honestly still cannot believe it actually happened but it did and I hope things get better soon. His and Jace's parabatai bond though, of course it's nothing like Will&Jem's but it's a bit close and I loved that a lot.

Isabelle Lightwood: How amazing was it seeing her comfort Clary and support her about everything she wanted to do in order to save Jace. I always feel really bad for her when she remembers Max, cause we don't usually see her vulnerable side and it's always heartbreaking when it's shown, which happened quite in this. Her umbrella though and how Alec and Simon didn't wanna go under it, that was fun. Her and Simon though, oh my god!!! They were always there for each other, supporting and encouraging each other to do things and the fact that she actually slept with his shirt one time, I loved that. That scene where she went to Simon's apartment and Jordan was there by himself instead was hilarious, also a bit deep cause she did admit that she owes Clary for saving Jace's life and that she likes Simon. I loved the way she always talked about Jace here, it showed how much he really means to her. I also liked how Magnus and her were getting closer. But okay, how badass and fierce she was talking to the Iron Sisters, that scene was just on point for her character. Also her conversation with Jocelyn defending Clary that she she can do whatever she wants, I loved that a lot. That scene where she almost for a second there was gonna admit that she loves Simon, had me have my hand on my heart the whole time and I just!!! Also how she gave him the sword showed how much she trusts him and my heart oh my god! She was just phenomenal in this.

Magnus Bane: Sassy and perfect as always. I swear, he is like my all time favourite character ever written. Can we talk about how he woke Alec up calling him "sweet pea" that was so freaking adorable. But I also got a bit frustrated with him when Alec finally made a bold move and they started to make out but he dismissed it to go back to the papers. I'm not saying that Alec is a saint, in fact he made me furious with him a million times like that time with the scarf and how he made fun of it being given to Magnus by Queen Victoria making him get angry. But also he is too shady about his past and I sometimes cannot blame Alec for getting mad or curious. Can we talk about bow everyone just left their homes and they're all staying in his place now and using it as "team good" secret house. The summoning demon scene and how Alec said nothing good comes from demos and Magnus was all like "I'm pretty sure I came from someone summoning a demon" that just made me laugh for quite 2 minutes. I loved how after that scene he was all like "I'm not getting my security deposit back" as if it was his biggest concern at the moment. His and Simon's conversations are just the funniest thing ever and how he always messed up Simon's name too. But he actually cares about him that's why they drove to the farm instead of portaling there in order to give him time if he wanted to change his mind. The scene where he got hurt and used Alec's strength, I just cried cause they are just!!! The break up though, he was just heartbreaking and heartless of him yet I couldn't really fully blame him because Alec had it coming, I just wished they were not gonna break up. So like what now? Are they gonna have to pay him from now for his help?

Sebastian Morgenstern: I don't even know where to start with him. I have so many things to say about him that I honestly don't know where to begin or what to say and what not to. For a while I almost felt bad for him but other times he just got on my nerves that I wanted to kill him myself. The whole thing with him and Jace being bonded together and how he was dominant making Jace do everything he wants him to, just sickened me. Most of the things he did were just really UGH! And I think that's allI wanna say about him for now.

So, that's all I guess for this one and hopefully I'll get to reviewing the CoHF soon cause it's quite overdue.

Honestly, my feelings about the plot and the characters remain the same as my previous reading, but I just couldn't stand those directly quoted paragraphs from either like three pages before or even from different books. Every time one of those showed up, I imagined those flashback scenes from Twilight set to the music of Christina Perri. Like, why not just say Clary remembered what he had said and leave it at that, or, idk, let me draw my own conclusions and connections for once?

(Original rating: 5 stars)

After the literary trainwreck of City of Fallen Angels, I had no expectations for this book, but my stubbornness kept me from not reading the next installment. I've never been more happy with how annoying I am. City of Lost Souls is show more just what a good YA dark fantasy book ought to be. The engaging plot, the twists and turns, the multiple perspectives, gave this book what its predecessor lacked: substance. Every character was actively advancing the plot in one way or another, steadily without a rushed climax. While some of the plot twists were obvious, it didn't feel like the author was dumbing down the reader, rather I felt more like a detective who had successfully solved the mystery. The unexpected twists were even more welcome then.

I am eager to finish the series and move onto the stories that follow, as the world of Shadowhunters is full of wonders.

First off, let us get this out of the way...

City of Lost Souls is not as good as City of Bones, City of Ashes or City of Glass. Sorry.
City of Lost Souls is better than City of Fallen Angels. You're welcome.

The story picks up right where Fallen Angels left off. You remember? That horrific cliff hanger that the wonderful Ms. Clare made us all so angry with. Jace and Sebastian have vanished. Clary and the Scooby pals are distraught and the Clave has launched a search, though more for Sebastian than for Jace.

The tale skips around from person to person quite often. You know what is happening with Clary, Simon, Izzy, Alec and Magnus, and even Maia and Jordan get good coverage. It became less and less the story of Clary & Jace the show more star-crossed lovers. It became everyone's story. Jace actually gets less play in this installment than any other.

So, if you are a Jace fan (like me), you may be disappointed. I wasn't. Jace was obnoxious. I like him broody and egotistical. Not brain dead and carefree. Which is the effect Sebastian has on him. I was all right with the lack of Jace.

On the other hand, if you are a Simon fan, you may get great satisfaction here. Simon was less whiny, in my opinion. Still just as hilarious as always. He is finding out where he belongs and with who (wink, wink), who cares for him, where his relationships lie and what his place in the Shadowhunter world is. Maybe he isn't the outsider he thought he was, only linked by his long friendship with Clary.

I know there are many, many Magnus fans out there so he earns a mention, right? Magnus, as always, delivers. There seems to be no end to the sacrifices he is willing to make for this band of misfit demon killers. Especially where Alec is concerned. Or is there a limit? You'll have to read the book to find out what the heck I am talking about!

There are so many love stories taking place simultaneously here, romance fans will be drooling over it. But, for me, that was the downfall. So much lovey lovey, not enough fight fight. I expected a big epic battle to save Jace's soul. There was a battle. It wasn't very epic. There was a moment that reminded me of the most memorable Buffy/Angel moment. I apologize to those who won't get the reference. But we will have to wait for City of Heavenly Fire for this epic battle. Since it is earmarked for release in spring of 2014...it's going to be a long wait.

All in all it's a good read for TMI fans. It actually renewed my love for the series and I think I will be revisiting each book before the release of the final installment.

Before Reading review:

Am I the Only one who wants Jace to die? I love him, but him and Clary are so anonoying that I just want to pull my hair out. I want him to die so that Clary can a) be less annoying while consumed with grief b) Be relived because Sebastian died with Jace or c) throw herself off the Brooklyn Bridge.

After Reading review:

Just finished CoLS. It was... better than I thought it would be. After the pile of random shit that was CoFA, I expected something way worse. Like horrendous. But it wasn't. Actually, if you cut out the Jace/Clary bits, it was actually good.
Let's break it down:

Characters

Jace - I hated him in CoFA, 'cause he was so unbearably mopey. In this one, he actually redeemed himself. He was funny again, and show more sarcastic and all the things I liked about him. But when he was with Clary, he sometimes had those disgustingly mushy moments. Some people like when guys are all swoony and talk constantly about how their love is "constant as a heartbeat/moon/the Earth" and their devotion "as deep as an ocean/sea/all the water bodies on Earth put together."
(not that Jace actually said any of those things, but that was the gist of it.) I find that kind of thing annoying. Plus, it was inconsistent. One minute, he is making jokes about "ravishing" Clary, the next he is looking lovingly into her eyes professing his love. I mean, come ON! Really? Those mushy moments just made me roll my eyes. If there had been one more of those moments, my eyes would have rolled right out of my head. But over all, Jace was more... Jace... in this book than he was before.

Clary - Clary, Clary, Clary. Why must you insist on being such an annoying little dipshit? Why don't you understand that the whole world does NOT revolve around Jace??? Why can't you listen to your mother and face facts: YOU AND JACE DO NOT BELONG TOGETHER! Why do you make such stupid plans? Why are you so selfish? Why do you feel the need to put everyone you love in danger?

Clary is very annoying in this book. She goes off with Team Evil, doesn't tell anyone but Simon about it, and makes the stupidest desicions! Why would you listen to Jace? Why would you give in to hime and take the fairy drugs? Haven't you ever heard of date-rape? Don't you know that Jace is obviously a bad influence? Don't you know pressuring you to do things is a sign of an unhealthy relationship? Don't you know that when you are in a bad relationship, you should leave??? Honestly!
Clary is possibly the stupidest heroine I have ever read about, behind Nora Grey from Hush, Hush. Everything Clary does, she has Jace on the brain. Not anyone else, like her mom, Luke, or Simon. Oh, no... she doean't care that she just possibly ruined Simon's life, or caused Jocelyn to have a heart attack, or that she endangered their lives as well as her own... No. Clary has no sense of self-preservation and she obviously HAS A DEATH WISH!So why doean't she just die?

Simon - I like Simon. He's kind of awesome right now to me. CoFA changed me from a Jace-person (NOT the crazy JACE-IS-GOD-ON-EARTH-I-LOVE-HIM-MARRY-ME kind!)to a Simon person. Simon is nice, while still kicking ass. Which is a very hard thing to do. (Case and point: Jace. Kicks ass on the outside, mopey and sarcastic ball of lust on the inside.) Although I do question Simon's sanity a bit because he still is friends with Clary...

Izzy - Always liked Izzy. I thought her showing a softer side was really nice. And the whole thing with Simon is really cute.

Alec - Pissed me off. He was acting like a jelous brat.(I mean, come on. Magnus has like for some 200 years! Do you really expect him to be a virgin? It's not like he knew that he would ever meet you, much less that you would be a couple!

Magnus - Brilliant as always. Magnus can do no wrong. Good for him at the end, breaking up with Alec.. He deserved it!

Jocelyn & Luke - Not much to say... they weren't in it very much!

Sebastian/Jonathan - I liked him. I know he's evil, and a prevert, but he's not as annoying as Jace&Clary, and I kind of feel sorry for him. Sure, he's sick and messed up on so many different levels, but he's lonley and had a messed up childhood. I'm suprised that he hasn't gone completly over the edge and started talking to coconuts or something. Plus he's a kick-ass villian and he's got a sense of humour. What more could you ask for?

Maia - Meh... She's just filler.

Jordan - The biggest plot device ever. Cassie used him to get Maia away from Simon so that Izzy and Simon could get together. He's a plot device that introduces the Praetor Lupus, which is another plot device. Also, where did this random Jordan POV shit come from? No one actually cares about Jordan, from what I can tell.

Plot

This book might have the most recycled plot ever. Seriously.
1. At the end of previous book, Heroine's boyfriend is claimed by Dark Side.
2. Herione geos on selfish siucide mission to spy on Dark Side, while (BONUS!) making out with Evil Boyfriend.
3. Heroine realizes that Evil Boyfriend is not so evil, and goes along with Big Bad's plan.
4. While this is happening, More Interesting Secondary Characters try to save Heroine from Evil Boyfriend and Big Bad.
5. More Interesting Secondary Characters recieve Plot Device that will help Evil Boyfriend.
6. MISC save the day.
7. Evil Boyfriend is cured via stabbing. Is now filled with Angel Shit that makes him glow. Heroine and Angel Boyfriend cannot touch, because Heroine will burn up from the inside. (a la Evermore series)
THE END.

Predictions for next book:
1. Clary and Jace do the deed and Clary Spontaneously Combusts. (Optimal theory)
2. Everything turns out hunky-dory, as per Cassie's writing predicatablilty. (Worst Possible Scenario.)
3. Jace and Clary refrain from the deed and both die from pent-up-lust. (second best theory.)

Writing.

Cassie feels the need to over-describe everything. My friend and I, decided to count how many times the word "gold" was used when describing Jace. The answer? 31. Think about that. Jace come into the book at page 55. He is only in the parts with Clary, so he is not there all the time. I also seperated the "goldens" by POV change. Jace is described as golden IN EVERY SINGLE POV CHANGE AT LEAST ONCE. Usually it is twice. The most amount he has ever been called golden in a single POV change is 6. SIX. Most 'golden's are describing his eyes. Cassie also describes him as bronze, and his hair as a halo.
In adittion to this, me and mt friend also counted how many times Jordan's eyes are described as hazel. the answer to this is 7 and a half. His is nearly not as much as Jace and his golden-ness, but Jordan only have a few scenes, and most of the hazels were used within a page of each other. Not very good. Cassie need to brush up on her adjectives.

The End. (Of This Reveiw).

In City of Lost Souls, there'll be hell to pay
The Shadowhunters' world is in disarray.
The reality is blurred between friends and foes,
And in this game of hmmm....love? anything goes.

For Jace is lost and his will is on loan
And if Clary's not careful, all will be blown.
Will their love be strong enough to withstand
The pain and destruction from Sebastian's hand?

And then there is Simon, with the Mark of Cain,
Will he be Heaven or Hell's, and can he be slain?
And Isabelle Lightwood who stole Simon's heart,
Will losing Max and then Jace tear her apart?

And what about Alec who loves Magnus Bane,
Is immortality possible for him to obtain?
Or will he grow old and thus wither away,
Perhaps he should bargain with the Queen of the Fae.

To burn down the show more world is Sebastian's goal,
But even more, he wants his sister's soul.
To make her love him is his greatest need
Through blood and death, will he succeed?

Through broken hearts and minds and dangers untold,
For fighting heaven and hell, they will pay tenfold.
At the end of day, they must all stand and fight,
Or else they fall victim to Sebastian's dark might.

This is the BEST book in the Mortal Instruments series!!! I read it in one day, and then I went back and read and re-read my favorite parts--there were quite a few! I'm actually tempted to stop writing right now and go re-read them again!!!

You know how there are certain moments that change your life? Well, reading City of Lost Souls was one of those (okay...so much more than a moment, but still) moments! I was swept away into Cassie's world--if only I could live there permanently.

Okay...so most people who are going to read this book already love Cassie Clare and TMI, so I'm just going to go with a few reasons why you should read this RIGHT AWAY! (We'll do a countdown)

5. I love when the Fae interfere--I mean, they are just so cunningly evil! Anytime the Queen is around, you know you are in for something dark and twisty!

4. We get to see into Magnus's world! His world is quirky and fun, but with an air of mystery and danger. It divides the line between good and evil, and it's nice to ride that line with the warlock. Magnus has been in so many of Cassie's books, but I really love seeing him get personal in this one!

3. I love the world that Sebastian, Jace, and Clary get swept away in. I won't say much because it would be too spoilery, but there was so much grey there that I didn't know who to trust--and I didn't care! I just wanted more!

2. Sebastian is the absolute best villain ever! I mean--bold statement coming--I think I like him better than Voldemort! (Please don't strike me with a lightning bolt...) He's charming and sexy and manipulative at first, and I just can't help but have a weird crush on him, but then we witness one scene that shows his true depravity. There is nothing better than a truly insane, sexy, yet oh so creepy villain! (Brief Statement: The scene in question has gotten a lot of rumble over the past week, and in my opinion, there was nothing wrong with it. It was there to show how truly vile Sebastian is, and it worked.)

1. Jace--of course! Even though he's not the Jace we all remember, he is still to die for! He's just as sexy, just as scandalous--even more so because Sebastian's pulling the strings, and just as kick butt! I dare you not to completely fall in love with him!

So...if my wonderful poem didn't convince you and my wonderful countdown did not convince you, then I have to conclude that you are just crazy! May Jace's stele strike you down!

love a good series almost as much as I love a

Image from Library Thing
big fat novel. Cassandra Clare has met both of my requirements! These are the last two books in the Mortal Instruments series. In the midst of these books she also wrote the Infernal Devices series that is a prequel to these, and in an absolutely wonderful way is not completely a prequel!

These books tell the story of Clary Fray and Jace Herondale - both Shadowhunters. In this earth the world is defended from demons by Shadowhunters descended from angels. And the world is threatened by Clary's evil brother Sebastian - I am not talking run of the mill evil - but demon spawn, everything is turned on it's head and life as we know it will end when he gets control evil!

As show more usually happens in YA lit - the teens save the day. And there is a bit of romance - between a werewolf and a shadowhunter, between a shadowhunter and a warlock and between Clary and Jace! Sometimes that can be annoying - but in these I was ok with it. It's mostly longing and wondering and hoping. The cover art makes it look much hotter than it actually is!!!

This is a complicated story - one that takes hundreds of pages and multiple books to roll out...and I loved every minute of it! Watching these awkward mundanes (non-magical or not yet magical) teens grow up on the pages of the book. In that way it reminded me of Harry and Ron and Hermoine. The hope of every teen to be something amazing and the horror of every teen to be something amazing all rolled up together.

I highly recommend these books! and in typical series fashion - at the end of this one is a small tidbit of the next series. The twist Clare makes is each series is intertwined and foreshadowed! I LOVE THAT!! I would love to see her planning notes. How does she keep it all straight?? I stand in awe of writers who are able to craft a story in the way she does! Bravo!!
