John Chilton divides his time between being a professional jazz trumpeter (accompanying singer George Melly) and writing books on jazz. He has written the standard works on Billie Holiday, Sidney Bechet, Louis Jordan and Coleman Hawkins as well as the definitive account of the careers of early jazz musicians.
